The very dark plot could have worked, but its all too exploitative, sleazy and cheesy. As interesting as it is to see Mark Lester play a different character to that he plays in Oliver, it doesn't stop him being incredibly wooden. Also, every time something f&*ked up happens in the film, the characters show very little reaction to it, which is infuriating. Its a mess too, the end especially, which is very shocking, and was probably one of my favourite moments, but it seems almost tacked on as an afterthought it happens so randomly.
Basically its just twisted soft porn (disturbingly almost verging towards child porn at times) masquerading as an intelligent thriller.
Don't listen to the other reviewers, its not worth tracking down.

Don't get me wrong, this is a horribly by the numbers, worthless and forgetable film, but in my circle of friends it has developed a cult classic status. This is due to a friend giving me repeated copies of it as gifts as a long running joke. This caused me and some other friends to make our own sequel to it, Number 2 With a Bullet, to give to him on his birthday. After showing our film to some more friends we then made another, Number 3 With a Bullet. We even plan to make another in the next month. These are crudely made pieces but are highly entertaining nonetheless (more so than the original it has to be said).
I hope that one day the makers of this poor buddy movie discover the legacy they have created (just as long as they don't sue).

This has everything you want from a classic kung fu film - lots of superbly choreographed action, plenty of cheesy but fun humour, and even a reasonable plot, which actually gets quite nasty at times. The fighting really is the main reason to see it though, it really is something to behold. Plenty of somersaulting, using props, and crazy moves with ridiculous names, theres even a bit of weapon fighting too. The film never gets the coverage or respect it deserves unfortunately, but if you read this, I hope it will move you to watch it, love it, and tell all your friends. Trust me, if you're into old style kung-fu along similar lines to Drunken Master, you're in for a treat.
