A intelligent screwball comedy that sets a standard - what a great cast, each one fully developed and fully integrated to the story. Four genius actors: Myrna Loy! William Powell! Spencer Tracy! Jean Harlow! Each plays their part with subtlety and depth. Myrna Loy captures every expected side of her character; I can't say what they are without spoiling one of the joys of the film. Don't look for the hard nut of the Thin Man series. Same goes for the others, with special kudos to Jean Harlow. She always plays the brainy ditz but here she has more range - falling for William Powell while engaged to Spence?!?
William Powell plays his standard Thin Man character but holds the sharp repartee in check, going for lovable but flawed instead.
Spencer Tracy brings his usual strength to this comic romp never looking silly. Powell v. Tracy: I have to look for more with this duo.
Okay, the fishing scene was a bit overdone, and the wrap up will be thought of as contrived by some. Sure it was, but it works! Let's face it we all love the gowns, the suits, the elegance; where's ocean liners like these? At 98 minutes, it really delivers.
Every character comes out sparkling and lovable right to the last minutes. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going it took a turn to keep me guessing how they could spin to the inevitable happy ending. I'll leave it to you to enjoy, don't miss it.
