Since its inception, cinema has attempted to capture both reality and duplicate dreams. Dreams sequences in film have taken many forms, but in my humble opinion this film captures it best.
So often in cinema the dream sequence serves some greater purpose to the overall story, which is not in keeping with the reality of dreams.
Dreams are typically so difficult to comprehend, as our unconscious mind jumps from one thing to the next, attempting to reconcile problems in our waking life.
Meshed of the Afternoon really does feel like a dream in every way. The film makers did such a great job that I am sure this must be based on a real dream that the writer Maya Deren had. She probably woke up from it, wrote it down quickly before it escaped her as dreams so often did, and then went and filmed it!

This is a piece of history, and it is something very important about an era not long ago but which is quickly being forgotten.
For that reason, it should be required viewing in my opinion. Otherwise we are doomed to forget it.
It is an important bit of recent history that will soon be forgotten because, people just don't study this stuff these days. They don't teach it in schools.
First and foremost, this is not a concert film. It is about the rock and roll group the Rolling Stones, but it is about a cultural movement and a shocking moment that happened when the group was on tour.
People should watch this film and learn this stuff so it will be remembered and not forgotten. It was directed by the Maysles brothers, who directed another great film called Grey Gardens which should also be required viewing in my opinion. You should check that one out too if you ever get the chance.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) uses a few ingredients we are all familiar with, but uses them in new combinations to create something not quite like anything we have ever seen before on the big screen.
I would be hard pressed to explain why this film is truly unique or innovative, or why it deserves to be viewed in such a light.
None the less the fact remains, this is something special. Maybe not quite extraordinary, but none the less worthy of your time.
The film maker, who has strayed out of his normal comfort zone on this experiment (because that is exactly what it is, and a successful one by any standard) takes the familiar ingredients of start power, long takes, and gorgeous cinematography, and through them weaves a modern story with the effect being greater than the sum of the parts.
That is exactly what great film making is, has always been, and will always be about.
