This is one of the most powerful war film ever made, but also the less known regarding of the quality of this masterpiece. I guess only movie goers, die hard movie buffs specialized in war films and - or - Japenese features, can know it. Of course, it is long, overlong and maybe that's the reason why it was not widely released in Western countries. It is a definitely anti war film that I recmmend to those interested in History of the WW2, especially the Japanese point of view. I guess there were many more war films from the Rising Sun Empire, as good as this one, but unfortunately not shown in Europe.
Not uninspired story, rather unusual, surprising but so boring, so flat...if you seek for action scenes and suspense, tough characters, this episode is definitely not for you. Keep away from it. It is the total contrary of the two previous episodes. Totally. It is actually another kind of story, but still involving a gangster. Just it is unusual. Unusuall but boring. Because something unpredictable and unusual can also be boring and flat. There is no climax here. I know that among the next epsodes, there will be really worth viewing episodes. Now, that's up to you. I have just exposed my opinion.
As long as you don't compare this movie with HEAT or THE TOWN, it is worth the watch. Not a great film, not a great cast, but enough interesting to justify the viewing. Adrian Brody is not exceptional, as usual, despite his Academy Awards statuette for THE PIANIST in 2002; Brody is like Nicolas Cage, you may find him in any kind of film, any kind. He just does the job. The drama and character study elements are more important here than the pure action sequences. I like this film for what it is. But I don't think that in a bank safe deposit room, you have the reserve bank money amassed on a table, in the middle of the customer's safe deposit boxes...
