I'm sure anyone who has read Mr. Flynn's autobiography, "My Wicked, Wicked Ways", will agree his real life was as exciting as Don Juan's. Women, adventure and a bit of his "wicked ways" makes for enjoyable reading for an Errol Flynn fan. Having said this, "The Adventures of Don Juan" is a wonderful, entertaining movie with Mr. Flynn looking handsome, fit and very comfortable in this role. The fencing scenes, costumes and a terrific Max Steiner score are excellent. The supporting cast simply adds to the entertainment value. After many years it was a pleasure to see this movie once again and realize what a wonderful actor Errol Flynn was. No other actor could have played the part better, or looked as good in tights.
This is a favorite movie of mine. Mostly, because I am a fan of James Cagney's and thought his performance in this movie was excellent. In his autobiography, "Cagney By Cagney" Mr. Cagney told of many actual events in Mr. Chaney's life that were used in the picture and one in particular that was so sad they decided not to include it. Although loosely based on the life of Lon Chaney, Sr. I still felt the producers used enough actual events in Mr. Chaney's life to convey to the viewers what a truly talented man he was. Also, the tremendous challenges he faced being the son of deaf and mute parents. This is an excellent movie that stands up well through the years.
First, let me say that I had a very hard time finding a copy of this movie. I found the cast very good and Anthony Dexter as Valentino gives a sensitive and respectful performance portraying the much loved silent screen star. Eleanor Parker is lovely as Valentino's true love, and Patricia Medina is beautiful in a supporting role. Richard Carlson is also very effective in his role as the director in love with the star, (Eleanor Parker). For me, the highlight of the movie is the dancing, which is beautifully interpreted. Although loosely based on the life of Rudolph Valentino, I still found the movie entertaining and would recommend it to any Valentino fan or anyone who loves a good romantic movie.
