What am I missing here? Why is this film getting such glowing feedback? As a lover of the Twilight zone I was initially intrigued. To it's credit there was a lot to like, great actors, excellent performances, terrific cinematography, an interesting story construction in reverse, and quite touching. However I was able to put it all together well before the final scene which arrived as a whimper rather than a bang, it came as no surprise and left me saying is that it? Talk about much ado about nothing. The term unearned valour comes to mind. I mean it wasn't awful, it was just missing the right levers to tug at my heart strings the way I guess it was designed to. There was not enough meat on the bone to sink my teeth into. I felt it just needed a little more development time. Good screen writing is a fine art and there were to many blanks left for me to fill in, I felt the creators are taking to much for granted from the audience, I get it but you need to show me if you expect to move me, I'm not doing the hard work for you despite appreciating what you are trying to do. I'm emotional and regularly cry in films but not this one, they just had not put in the necessary work. Close but no cigar. Enjoyable on many levels but A Wonderful life for this age it is not. So sue me.
This Doco is very entertaining and a lot of fun especially if you are a fan of UFO's, mad scientists and Hoax's and I tick every box. One of the best things about this production was all the extensive home video recorded by this eccentric loving family, I was moved by their interactions and all their activities were imbued with a effervescent sense of fun. For me this show was a real sugar hit however I can imagine it rubbing more serious and responsible adults the wrong way. The production was well crafted to trigger the full gamut of human emotions and ramp up the drama, well done. I really don't have a strong opinion about the truth of the situation at the core of this story but I enjoyed it none the less and I will say without crazy characters like this living amongst us the world would be a poorer place and a lot more boring.
I took a chance on this based wholly on the poster which I love. It communicated the tone I generally go for. For the most part I really enjoyed this thriller. Well crafted story, great cast and solid performances, beautiful scenery, top notch cinematography, some really standout dialog and a moving deep dive into the human condition. What's not to like? Well despite the pluses of this highly enjoyable production at times I found myself feeling it was running a little slow, a little stilted, it never quite rose to the levels of excitement I would of expected. The term painting by numbers comes to mind and the colours never spilled over the lines. It went through the motions but never exceeded them or surprised me. I guess I was just expecting a little more from this ensemble of screen culture talent. Do give this a chance, it is highly enjoyable just a little to slow and predictable for my taste.
