  • Two Episodes of Slow Cooking Hamm

Your Friends and Neighbors features Jon Hamm as Coop, who has a fancy finance job and lives in a ritzy little village. Coop is divorced, supporting two kids who try to ignore him and are living with his ex-wife and the man she cheated on him with. Then Coop's evil boss fires him and since this is TV reality, he is still stuck with a two-year non-compete agreement. Too stubborn to accept a lesser job, Coop turns into an inept criminal.

The first two episodes move at a glacial pace, with lots of catty country club chatter, punctuated by shots of Jon slamming his Hamm bone into pretty women. The only likeable character in the village is Coop's mentally ill sister. The second episode gave hints of the pace picking up, so I might watch the third if I have nothing better to do.

  • A little history and a lot of great music

A Complete Unknown follows Bob Dylan on a bumpy star trip from his arrival in New York City in 1961 to his controversial appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Being a fan of the music of Dylan, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, and Pete Seeger, I had to see this movie and it did not disappoint. The actors who played these characters were all convincing with their speaking and singing voices. I would have preferred more about Dylan's pre-New York life in Minnesota, but the movie is already long at 129 minutes.

Timothee Chalamet portrays Dylan as part fearless rebel and part callous jerk, which is consistent with what I already knew about him. A deep character study of the enigmatic Dylan is not attempted. Instead, the music carries the movie. The most difficult performance is handled capably by Monica Barbaro, who does a more than credible impression of Baez's beautiful soprano voice.

For those unfamiliar with Dylan, the movie serves as an introduction to an important musical and cultural figure. Although the movie covers a well-documented phase of Dylan's career, his longtime fans will likely find something of interest here.

  • Brave women deliver the mail, but director fails to deliver

Ignore the reviewers who tell you to ignore negative reviews. Reading a review that's partially negative isn't going to hurt you.

Anyway, the Six Triple Eight follows a black female Army unit charged with sorting millions of undelivered letters and packages in a short time during WWII. The unit is given third class treatment and facilities, and the general in charge of their division attempts to undercut their mission.

Kerry Washington (as the unit's hard-driving captain) and the actors portraying unit member all give strong performances. In contrast, the actors who portray the fat general and his racist white officers act like they're in an old 60s or 70s movie about a Southern sheriff and his redneck deputies. A woman in the unit who apparently is supposed to provide comedy also seems to be based on a stereotype.

Tyler Perry deserves kudos for bringing a compelling and touching story to the screen, but he mucks up the movie with clumsy courtship scenes and a heavy-handed treatment of Army racism. The movie is too long at 129 minutes, mainly because it starts with an unrealistic battle scene followed by a courtship straight out of a BET movie. Like most movies "based on a true story," many parts of this movie have dubious historical accuracy.
