What makes this movie click is the fine comedic actress Meg Ryan whose every facial posture perfectly punctuates her lines. How any man can walk away from her, as Billy Crystal does in the opening scene, is difficult to fathom. I'm laughing out loud many times, an oddity for me. Such perfect retorts, such flashing wit...and Crystal's and Ryan's genuine intelligence made the lines live. I've read a critique saying that no woman would DO what ryan does in the famous restaurant-orgasm scene. Not true. I dated a woman who would. She got away. Life does not duplicate art. If you haven't seen it, you've missed one of the best romantic comedies of all time.
I could listen to Jennifer Tilly's voice until the Sun became a red giant. I don't know if this movie has become a Midnight Movie cult classic anywhere, but it deserves to be for her solo song/dance. I rarely laugh outloud viewing a video alone. I did on frequent occasions for this flick. Jeff Tambor's silent takes..so classic. Robby Benson was repulsively vile as the rep of mindless media intrusion. I'd not heard anything about the movie and just picked it up at the library because of J.T. Now I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a quick elevator out of the dumps.
