I make these comments having seen the file many years ago.
I put this file in the category of "early 'Disney-like' family films with the addition of a bit of Australian realism." For instance you will see teen (pre-teen?) smoking; such an activity not "wholesome" enough in the early American Disney world but not exorcised here in the quest for purity and goodness. I have seen other similar, pleasant films of Australian origin.
In the USA at least , it seems the original target audience hardly exists, unfortunately so in my opinion.

I agree with Roger Ebert's '87 review; this movie is unfocused. Concentrate on the Ann-Margret and young man's relationship with an open mind. The relationship may not be common but if realism were the criterion for excellence in a movie, what (I include "documentaries" and "news footage") would qualify?
This movie is mainly for Ann-Margret fans and those who like a little twist to the confusions of life, at whatever age.
