This film is many things - pleasant, bright, cheerful and lyrical. But what is it about? Is it a story about Ivan the ethnographer? Or maybe Stepan, a chronic lethargic sleeper? Or maybe it's the region Yakutia itself?
It may sound cliché, but i'd say that this is a movie about life. Its course, its value, its beauty and meaning. The movie doesn't rush the story and allows the viewer has time to consider the nature of Yakutia, including the lives of ordinary people in the early twentieth century, the local craftsmanships, various customs, beliefs and colorful characters.
After watching and immersing myself in this movie, I felt so light and easy, and also had many questions about the work of ethnographers, Yakutia in winter, national roots of various Yakutian cultural elements presented in the movie.
This is definitely worth your time, especially if you want to regain a bit of faith in modern Russian movies.
