It is just amazing how some good ideas can be wasted. The story of a film maniac obsessed with Marilyn Monroe who uses movies plots to kill the people who abuse him is a decent one. The devotional relationship that he establishes with a Marilyn look alike girl is also interesting. The insertion of b&w clips from classic movies to show the thoughts of the main character is somehow original. However, then we get the comforting detective with cliché sentences, the sweet police-woman who is rough when necessary, the stupid romance between these two and a lot of unrealistic details (can anybody explain where a broken kid found the money for all the display of luxuries and clothes that he organizes at the end??) When you notice all the good intentions you really want to like the movie, however, the incoherent details and the cheap dialogue does not allow you to fall in love with it precisely. At the end the movie is just a curiosity with a very sad song at the end.
I have to say that finally I see a Fernando Colomo's movie that I like. "Al sur de Granada" is beautifully filmed, has a nice pace and contains superb acting. The recreation of beginning of the century Alpujarras is convincing, the characters credible and the plot engaging.
