Many opinions of films seem to be offered by people who have never seen them, or based on some irrelevant issue. A British film from 1914 might be despised because it's not a Soviet Academician film from 1928, or a film might be written off because its director or star offered some opinion about something else which the reviewer disagreed: this year's SULLY got a lot of rants online because director Clint Eastwood is politically conservative; the very amusing GHOSTBUSTERS remake was hated because it was full of women; and everything by D.W. Griffith is written off as racist because of BIRTH OF A NATION.

I try, in my reviews, to tell anyone who is interested in my opinions, to say what showed up on the screen, how well it worked, and how it fits into the vast array of films I have seen. I certainly don't expect a reader to agree with my opinions, but I will try to continue offering those opinions, as honestly as I can, about the film under discussion.

Happy Hollow Turkey Shoot

  • Worst Bert Lahr Imitation Ever

Possible Possum and the other animals enjoy the annual turkey shoot. Luke the Turkey thinks he's good at evading their fire. In fact, they miss deliberately because he's a friend. But this time a stranger comes and puts down his money expecting to walk away with a dead turkey.

It's a pretty good cartoon, with the characterization of Luke quite funny. But I'm pretty sure that's meant to be a Bert Lahr voice he does, and it's pretty bad.

  • A Couple Of Good Gags, But No More

When a mountain-climbing group offers $100 to the first person to climb a local mountain, the animals try to win it against a lederhosen-wearing alpinist.

It's typical of this series, in that it's slowly paced, minimally designed and animated, and hillbilly characters are personally annoying. There is, however, at least one good gag.

  • Was This Intended As A Pilot?

An Indian princess, her loyal servant, a temple guard transformed into a monkey, and the princess's pet elephant and tiger fight against an evil wizard to return a stolen ruby to its rightful place.

Nominally a Terrytoon, this 9-minute short looks like someone thought they could do as well as JOHNNY QUEST, especially by adding some real magic. Unhappily, it neve exceeds the lower limits of television animation, and the writing, particularly the dialogue, is dull and repetitive.
