I missed watching this in theaters since at that time I don't care that much for Filipino movies. When this film has been released in video (betamax at that time) I asked my sister to rent it. I regret that I wasn't able to watch it on the big screen. First, the great casting of all Lino Brocka babies (Hilda Koronel, Christopher De Leon and Bembol Roco) except Sharon Cuneta (the Philippines' Megastar) make up for this somewhat clichéd 'pinoy' melodrama based on comics but comes up with strong performances for all of the actors especially Sharon as the vengeful Salve. Acclaimed-Director Lino Brocka brings out the best in her, most especially the 'final' confrontation scene. You feel for her character as she try to rebuild her life while at the same time planning to destroy the life of a man she truly love.
This is one movie I regret not seeing in the big screen for reasons that I'm too young to go alone in movie house and that I won't appreciate the movie my age at that time. This really enjoyable and inspiring romantic comedy is by far, for me, the best movie of that genre that outshone the ones shown in the 90's.
The movie's success in all fields is mainly due to all the people responsible for this one: from the writer itself Mr. Neil Simon; to the wonderful actors Mr. Richard Dreyfuss, Ms. Marsha Mason and Quinn Cummings,the director Herbert Ross and certainly not the least is Bread's David Gates who sung the theme of the same title.
Frankly speaking, I don't expect the film to be one of my favorite films of all times. But since the movie surpassed my expectations because of the wonderful plot and characters, I don't get tired of watching this film over and over again. Storywise, it is simple but it paid off through Mr. Simon's sparkling and witty dialogues. And good to know that the film and actors are given Academy Award recognitions (Mr.Dreyfuss having won the best actor undeniably).
Above all, the inspiration the movie brings that one of us has his/her time to be loved once more without ever to be left alone again. And yes, the film manage to move me into tears every time.
