The romances I fast-forwarded through. I do have a weakness for industrial settings, and the darker the better. I think the setting and the odd background rumblings kept me hooked, even when the background rumbles were obvious just a tactic to create story motion without doing anything.
There's not a high body count in terms of death, interestingly, but there's a massive body count in hook ups. The LARP aspect of it intrigued me, kept me interested. The "scenarios" that are devised was interesting, too, the details of each LARP. The underlying premise was somehow engaging, and the eventual reveal.
It always said "Based on an idea by" at the beginning, and that feels like all there ever was, that idea. They didn't have a realized story from beginning to end. But the idea kept me there.
