This movie just didn't work. I was excited about it, and made an effort to go see it while it was in the theaters. Spike, Denzel.. was super hyped up about the movie. It was just was a miss and sort of a tonal mess. Actors are amazing.. for sure. Actually some great performances. Although there were some corny over the top parts too. But the movie was starting out with an interesting story.. and then sort of turned into a bland action movie. That didn't work for me.
Side note... there were some scenes there were like emotionally heavy, and Spike had loud music going in the background.. and the music wasn't even that great. It was distracting and took away from the power of the scene. Music should be used more carefully.. and not just put throughout every single scene (ok it wasn't every scene.. but some were just filled too much with corny music). That little thing just sort of bugged me.
There were scenes where Denzel's character was feeling strongly one way about something, and then the next moment, he completely changed his heart and it didn't track emotionally.

When I heard that Gareth Edwards was directing this movie, I was super excited. He brings alot of new energy to his movies. Unfortunately the movie was a let down for me. It didn't do anything new and the characters were all pretty flat. There was this random family that was in the half the movie, but it sort of didn't make sense why they were along on this crazy adventure. So many things didn't make sense and they didn't seem to want to make it feel more realistic. Lots of plot holes. The characters were doing the mission to just make money, and the studio and people involved in this movie seem to just be here for their paycheck too. Nothing special about the movie unfortunately and pretty forgettable.
Seemed like an interesting concept and some great actors in the cast. But for me it just didn't work at all. It just seemed like it got lost along the way. There seems like there might have been a good movie in there somewhere, but it just didn't do anything other than just show us chaos. Maybe it's showing that people are messy and full of chaos, but as a movie it was just all over the place and didn't click at all or give any sort of coherent story or message. Many of the characters were not fleshed out and were empty. A miss for me.
