Come on people. This is just about perfect. If you want bang bang shootem ups you should go somewhere else. This is slow and steady the way a good noir should develop. Owen's perfect as Sam Spade. Dialogue from Frank and Fontana's crisp and on point. Btw, I too enjoyed the canceled Perry Mason. Hammett would be proud. And that music oh man that music so fits the mood...
Acting - excellent
Plot - excellent
Cinematography - makes me want to go to rural France
Music - see above
Period - thoroughly captured
I'll leave the rest to ai: a good noir story is one that delves into the dark side of human nature, explores the moral ambiguities of the world, and creates a compelling suspenseful narrative with strong character development and a sense of unease - THAT is Monsieur Spade.

It's so rare and refreshing to see a detective played by black middle aged woman (Sarah D. Clarke). Whether we like it or not race and prejudice is in the middle of everything. So to watch this show and the Chelsea Detective where 5'4" white man (Adrian Scarborough) brings in the killer is an absolute joy. I'm still waiting for a gay detective to head a murder investigation. As for the actors, the writing, cinematography and the production they're all imo excellent. C. B. Strike is another excellent drama/muder mystery as are Miss Scarlet, Vienna Blood, Ludwig, Dark Winds, Poirot, The Long Shadow, Elementary I could go on... We're in a renaissance of good to great streaming mysteries.
I'm watching this series for the second time after ten or so years. It's even better the second time around than the first. Breaking Bad may be the best series ever but when it comes to depicting the overall American psyche of greed and corruption nothing beats Boardwalk Empire. The writing, the direction, the acting is all to one end - that money and power rule. Nothing else matters. There are no better angels here. This series should be required viewing (alongside a course in finance) for all high school seniors. As I write this in July 2024 in the midst of a presidential campaign, we see it all before us. How the sausage is being made by both parties. As it's meant to capitalism thrives on the bones of its people. No matter. Boardwalk Empire works because it shows us ourselves.
