Sugar starts off really well. Colin Farrell is excellent playing a modern version of an LA noir detective.
The show mixes vintage and modern well and the clips and references to old movies manage not to be annoying or cringeworthy.
There are some "what's going on here then" moments as the scene is set but we quickly get into the actual detective part of the show which is interesting with some intriguing characters.
Just when you're really enjoying it, the plot twist is revealed and it's all downhill from there.
It's ridiculous and adds nothing but rather detracts from a quirky detective show. From there in, you can't take anything seriously and it just feels like you are watching a different and hugely inferior show.
It's a real shame as Sugar had real potential. If there is season 2, I will probably skip it.

I was excited to watch this as Vicky McClure has done some great TV and the cast is strong but it didn't live up to my expectations.
I won't post spoilers but the overall story is actually really good however the show takes way too long to get to any kind of reveal.
At first it's unclear whether it's a crime/thriller story or something paranormal. This doesn't add to the suspense but is just annoying as it feels like the show doesn't actually know what it's about. Some of the side storylines are probably supposed to be interesting red herrings but they just feel increasingly pointless as the series goes on.
This could have been an excellent two-parter as there are some decent performances from a solid cast and the core story (when they get to it) is good. As it is, it feels puffy and self-indulgent which is a real shame and a real waste.

I was excited for this film, especially seeing the cast however I was sorely disappointed.
The only decent acting comes from Tom Hardy who does a good job of holding together a weak story. Austin Butler does very little other than look moody and Jodie Comer should never have been cast. She is a solid actress in the right role but she's a poor choice here. Her accent is awful and inauthentic and she doesn't have the presence needed for the narrator role with so much screen time.
The story doesn't really go anywhere, it's about a motorcycle gang and that's about it. The story of evolution gets lost and quite frankly at the one hour mark, you're just waiting for it to be over. A real waste of potential.
