  • Amazing piece

Niamh Algar plus interesting visual effects, non linear story and a message which is both deep and on the surface- why would you not want to see this little gem. I don't know where to watch it other than on Youtube and so when I watched it the quality was low and effects not quite so effective as I expect they probably were but I cannot verify this so for the moment it isn't a 10 fully. However I have rated it a 10 because it probably is and I have no proof it isn't if not a killer 9 because despite the low definition the action was deeply absorbed, the storyline given that it is a piece without words is stunning and aided by the lack of words fully which cannot be said of many things. The difference between men and women good and bad and the action and camera work used is beyond what one would expect of such a short film. Awesome.

  • Autistic representation done almost right and Epic

Though Samuel Bottomley is not autistic, so far as we know and does not have the same traits as Louis, he portrays and is portrayed in a positive light and it tackles the inherent ablism of society. Though we see a Temple Grandin poster, who though in some circles lorded suggested that a cure should be found for those with higher level support needs that herself which is problematic, he says that no autistic person is the same and there is a narrative about how he should get to decide his future even if he is scared of things others aren't and living alone may be difficult and passing school so also, he still get to live his own life. He isn't seen as babyish but a guy with different needs. Big thumbs up for that aspect. Then we have the awesomeness that is the twisty and turny plot, Colm Meany's face and the differing perspectives and heart rending moment which will make you cry. Mary is a character who is well matched to Louis and Daniel bringing out their beauty and complexity and can be compared to them in this regard too. No character is without a role or some form of basic personality and everybody's morals are on show. Its indie, funny, sweet and a worthwhile watch.

  • It isn't a story but there is life within

Spaceship covers issues of drugs, parenthood, mental health, teenage culture and rebellion, death, and life. Though many say that the movie is hollow and doesn't fit their pitch of a story about a father trying to find his daughter, I find this claim inaccurate. I believe he finds out who his daughter is and grows more able to have a relationship with her, and that is finding his daughter. We see a man struggling and a world struggling and find empathy and understanding. Despite objectively little happening, the world can end over nothings when you are a teenager and though it is just their lives there are giant emotions, complex relationships and high tensions. The abstract nature and the poetry creates something you wish to devour and may leave some hollow and with unanswered questions... but I fear that might be the point as we fear for their futures, worry over trival empty things and cannot connect to any fully- we feel as the characters do. It makes us want to find out more in real life and apply the lessons and our new found fears or acceptance that our fears are average into the real world and that is a good thing. It may keep you wondering for years but it is beautiful and sweet and stunning and an experience.
