  • Love this movie!

Great action, great suspense, great script, great practical FX, great creature design (although of course, based on the original), great story, great acting, great pacing, great location, great cinematography, great editing, great gore.

This movie is so goddamn fun! From the opening frames, to the somewhat heartfelt final moments, it's such an enjoyable ride. The film makers here set out to do one thing - make a fun movie - and that's EXACTLY what they accomplished. A nearly perfect escapism film that will have you enthralled the entire run time.

    Absolutely recommended! Won't disappoint.

  • Took me 3 weeks to finish this turkey

I am not a Robert Eggers fan. Hated The Witch. Pompous, pretentious and loathsome. Couldn't finish it. The Lighthouse. Still waiting to get the two hours of my life back.

This movie really isn't a movie. It's more a long marketing campaign for the movie. In a movie ad, you usually get all over-the-top acting moments spliced in to create attention and buzz. Except here, the ENTIRE movie is an over-acted moment. There is not one single, solitary actor playing a character in any subtle way. They're all yelling or over-dramatizing every single syllable of script. And that's no accident. That's Eggers interpretation of great performances. Zero nuance, all bluster.

And as many have said, it's not scary. And what should be creepy isn't because the acting keeps taking you of the movie. It's impossible to connect or empathize with any of the characters.

The movie didn't even start getting "good" until the Mustachioed Bandito started chomping on those kids (the most iconic vampire in movie history with a mustache?). And in the carriage ride after the funeral where the father lost both his children and his wife, and the other characters are cooking up a plot to get the evil dude, he's apologizing for being kinda "out of it" and all they tell him is just to have strength. Why the hell would the father care about anything at this point. He just lost everyone he loves. But the other characters are like, yeah man, that totally sucked, so anyway, let's keep spit-balling how to get Mustachio.

Don't get sucked up into the hype. This movie blows.

  • Ah, warm and fuzy religion strikes again

Godless: The Easfield Exorcism will reinforce what sane, rational people already know: religious fanaticism is the scourge of civilization. A mentally ill woman is subjected to the most vile and insidious ritual of an exorcism thanks to a town full of religious zealots. The actual events take place in 1994 Australia, but with some custom changes and horses instead of cars, this story could've well taken place in 1692 Salem Massachusetts.

The film itself, is tense and taught throughout. The acting is very well done, especially the lead actress. The story moves along at a steady pace and very rarely lags in any part. The setting is simple, but the production value, for what it is, is top-notch.

The horror aspect is, of course, what humans do to each other. You don't need any demons or devils. They're just not on the same level as us.
