Amazing, how does anyone of genuine comic talent get suckerd into making a BAD movie? La Jouet (the original version) was pretty much the same story. It was about how each of us can get caught in this situation. Not about race. The second the US Version did this, it fell flat. I bet if it cast another black actor as Priors boss, the tone would have translated perfctly. Not this obvious race issue that just was set out to be so absurd - it was unfunny and uncomfortable.
Just to see Prior at work, this is not the reason to watch it. go back and listen to his albums.. or better yet, watch Blazing Saddles.

I saw this film in 1982. Our French teacher in High school took all her classes to see this one day during school. We were supposed to be immersed in the language while watching. Mostly, we got caught up in the story (and the subtitles) simple story that was simply told.
However, the US version screwed it all up by making making it a farce. Subtlty is lost here in the US. I really would like to see it again, since I only saw it the once 20 years ago
