Can somebody please explain to me why some of the German barbarians sound like Folkwin sound like Berliners from today? I wish they would have taken notes from great series like Vikings, and would have adapted that more. Some Barbarians have hair gel in their hair, like how?
I think Marbod was a great addition to the series, he made the barbarian role believable, and his acting was one of the best in the series, but his wife acted like a noble. Again, please look at viking series references. It is hard to believe that when Rome came around to conquer, there were already snobby barbarians around. It doesn't fit.
DOP did amazing work, great camera play, great angles, music was okay, acting was partially decent, but for the most part horrid.
Well at least in season 2 they added a Muslim to play a German barbarian and a black woman to play a slave / war victim in Germany. Yippie!

Since it's a biopic, we can look past the fact that there is no positive female figure of importance in this entire movie. But what we can not ignore is the horrid casting and writing.
Even though it's a movie, the characters don't fly off the page, they are all super linear. I think the DOP did excellent work, especially for a German production. You can really tell because sometimes the camera and music were the only things that were able to portray feelings in various scenes, when barely anything came from the actors.
I really wanted to love this movie. I was super hyped about the story, but sadly I was mostly disappointed.

Tragic story with some halfway decent scenes, the turning point for the main actor at the end was nicely done, but other than that, the movie felt repetitive. We saw many scenes where the father was going through his loss and at some point it just felt like nothing was happening anymore. I would have loved to see the 2 parents reconcile as they do in the book. Plus filling this movie with boring and over used jokes did not help the movie at all. Of course some were funny, but not many. One thing that confused me though, that was never touched on, was the sons creepy biting his lips, when watching the movie, the guy one row in front of me asked his girlfriend whether the boy was retarded, because he kept making this one same face. Which I only after the movie found out is just how the kid likes to look, I cant believe they left that in, it always made me feel sad, when I saw him do that, because I thought the child was handicapped, but finding out later that he doesn't, just made me feel bad about them having him do that in the movie in every scene he is in, that's almost like clowining handicapped people.
