  • It has me hooked.

[Note: Apparently some people have been comparing this show with Six Feet Under because they are both "dark comedies". Watch them both and you'll see that they are quite different entities. I don't believe comparisons should be made.]

I saw the commercials for this show and was expecting a pure comedy. This show is not a comedy in the purest sense. Was I disappointed? No, not at all. What I found was that the show is much deeper than a comedy could have ever been.

Is the show funny? Absolutely, but there is so much more to the show than just laughs.

The main character, George (short for Georgia), is an 18 year old girl who was killed in a freak accident. After dying, she finds out that her destiny if to become of one the many grim reapers in the world. According to the show grim reapers do not take the lives of human beings, but merely take the souls and lead them to their final destination. Not a pleasant job, but someone has to do it to maintain the balance of the universe.

We find that George and her family were not happy. They didn't communicate, like many families, and their lives are(/were) filled with regrets. George didn't do anything with her life while she was alive. She wasted her gifts, dropped out of college, and worked crappy part-time jobs. While that doesn't sound like the most admirable person, we find that George is actually quite a good person at heart and she had let the world get the best of her. We also find that there's more to her than first meets this eye.

This, in my opinion is where the show really shines. First appearances do not tell the whole story. Take the rest of the cast...

Rube, an inflexible leader who is always on the reaper's case(s). Mason, a young burn out who died from a drug overdose and steals cars. Daisy, a former starlet who's vanity and love of money causes selfishness which effects others. Roxy, one of the most short-tempered and grumpy people you'll ever run into.

On first impression that's what you'll see. As the series progresses, the viewer sees that there is much more to all of these people. We get a glimpse into who they really are and why they have become the way they seem.

One of the other things unique to this show is that not only do we see the way George is coping with her death and after-life, but we also see how her family is effected by George's death. This is often sad to watch, but it is pretty true-to-life. It's not easy to lose someone, especially when you have regrets.

The show goes through a whole range of emotions often with unexpected twists. The obvious doesn't always happen and just like in real life, things aren't always as simple as they first seem. I've found myself laughing out loud at this show, but also crying like a baby too. For a show to do that for me is quite impressive in my book.

Lastly, one of the things I like is the irony of that George is doing more "living" now that she's dead than she ever did while she was alive. Maybe those of us who are just "going through the motions" could take a hint from that.

I wasn't sure I was going to like this show when I first started watching it. Now that I've seen the first season, I'm very much looking forward to new episodes. This show is a surprisingly enjoyable series, and I'm glad I took a chance on it.

  • One of the worst game shows in history.

First of all. Nearly every contestant is pretty much a half step from being a prison inmate. The show actually seeks out and finds people that are unethical or criminal in nature. One of the contests was introduced as a guy that stole his mother's car. Another won $2,000 by stealing raffle tickets. I only wish I was joking about this. There is no one that you wish to win, you hope they all lose. They are all some of the biggest lowlifes in the country.

As if this weren't bad enough, they get yet another chance to prove what lowlifes they are at the "Trust Box". The money that each team wins is somewhat up for grabs. Each member of a team stands on the side of the trust box to play a sort of twisted rock, paper, scissors type game. Each of the two people from the team chooses either "Friend" or "Foe". Here's how this works...

If they both think they trust each other they would both choose "Friend". They would then split the team money and each of them would take half home.

If neither thinks they can trust the other they would both choose "Foe". When this happens, they both screw each other and no one gets anything.

Now comes the worst. If they both appear to trust each other and one of them chooses "Friend" and the other chooses "Foe" then the person who voted "Friend" gets nothing. Nada, zilch, zippo. The person who voted "Foe" goes home with the entire wad of cash.

Sound bad? It's a lot worse watching it.

Trust me there's no redeeming quality to this piece of crap excuse for a show. Avoid it at all costs.

  • Borinnnnnnnnnng. (Yawn)

This movie is dull and unexciting. I can't see how anyone could care about any of the characters. A movie is bad when you start rooting for the bad guys. A movie is really bad when you don't want to root for anyone. I couldn't root for anyone, either "good" or "bad", I just wanted the movie to be over. I saw scenes stolen straight from other movies like Star Wars, Independence Day, and others, only done in an uninteresting way. If you're going to steal, at least do something interesting with it. I read somewhere that the bad guys were supposed to be 10 ft tall. They sure didn't look it. They looked like 6 ft actors wearing uncomfortable 1 ft boots. It didn't look real at all. The actors couldn't walk in them in a realistic enough way. The acting way overdone, exaggerated, cartoonish. Almost every line in the movie makes you want to roll your eyes. I can't imagine what they thought they were trying to accomplish. I read somewhere that this was supposed to be a church of scientology propaganda film and that the bad guys were supposed to represent psychologists and psychiatrists. Ironically the bad guys in the film seemed more like a scientology cult than anything else. I wonder if they realized that. In any case it seems that they failed at everything they attempted to accomplish with this film.

This isn't even worth watching in a Plan 9 from Outer Space kind of way. Plan 9 is funny in a "it's so bad it's laughably good" way, Battlefield Earth isn't even fun to make fun of. It's just plain boring.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......
