If you're a fan of French New Wave, this one'll appeal to you. This is sort of like Goddard in the Ghetto. More of a visual poem than a straight narrative. A little uneven in the story, but compelling weird characters, all cranked up to eleven. This film kind of reminded me of a lot of the 60s French cinema... in its loose use of camera, very precise cutting, unapologetic presentation of its loser characters. It felt very truthful and human -- not glossy and antiseptic. Great soundtrack. Beautiful young lead actresses -- Alison and Charis are their names-- the camera loves them.
In the bleak landscape of contemporary American cinema, there seem to be few who will do anything to shake it up. This film shakes it up.
Not for everybody, as are hamburgers, but amongst the grim clutter there is a fresh voice that sings through this rough journey.
Well worth the time to watch, and the hours later you'll spend thinking about it, as well.
