Having seen Justin Edgar's previous movies (Large - short, Dirty Phone Calls and Large - feature) I was expecting an empty headed teen comedy. I was very surprised to find that Round is in complete contrast to his earlier work. It is a mature and poignant film about inadequacy and unrequited love. The central performances are wonderful and enhanced by an excellent supporting cast. Mark Burgess' editing is flawless as in Justin's Direction. The cinematography is simple and unobtrusive. It is a beautifully crafted film that leaves you wanting more. I hope that this new more mature version of Justin Edgar gets the opportunity to write and direct another feature film soon. 10 out of 10. The best short I have seen in years.
This is a truly wonderful movie experience. The magical score adds to the atmosphere perfectly. It is beautifully photographed by Stephen H Burum and perfectly directed by Caleb Deschanel. The central performance by Griffin O'Neil is very watchable as is a great support cast which includes Elizabeth Daly and the late great Raul Julia. This is THE movie that made me want to make movies. The haunting final shot combined with the beautiful music has stayed with me for years.
I am actually a kubrick fan. I loved the book too. The movie however is terrible. Words cannot begin to express how much I hate this movie. From the terrible zoom lens shots to the shoddy production design and bad photography. The script misses key elements from the book. Characters disappear without a trace and one of the defining scenes where Alex plies some old ladies with alcohol in exchange for an alibi is inexplicably absent from the movie. It is mysoginistic trash. The book describes the sexy costume the girl wears who is to be a temptation to Alex after his conditioning and Kubrick uses the opportunity to show yet another pair of bare breasts. A scene where a young girl has been kidnapped by a gang is replaced with an unnecessary rape scene. Every woman is a victim in this movie. This is definately one for women haters. To be avoided at all cost.
