Two people, out to land cash by any means necessary, make a journey to murder an old woman. Nothing can stop them in their obsession, not traffic jams (one of the most amazing tracking shots of all time), not accidents, not even the occasional encounter with incarnated characters out of Victor Hugo. They finally off the harridan only to be captured by a cannabalistic guerrilla troop that murders the man and converts the woman. The acting is often wooden, but Godard was still young and who could keep up with the man? Scenes of outrage and hilarity (more than once I found myself saying "And now for something completely different . . .") intercut with powerful emotion and lyric beauty (even in subtitles, the "Greeting to the Ancient Ocean" scene will raise goosebumps.

Not many Full Motion Video games being put out now, but The

Beast Within is the best of them all, hands down. The second in

the Gabriel Knight series, Gabe is now in Germany trying to

solve murders involving a werewolf. But what does a lost opera

by Wagner have to do with it? Incredible storylines, fine acting

by all involved, and wonderfully rendered backgrounds.

They don't make games like this everyday. The original Gabriel

Knight mystery showed the world how to make a computer game. You

control Gabriel Knight, a budding true-crime novelist in New

Orleans. He's caught up in the investigation of the recent

Voodoo Murders with the help of his assistant, Grace Nakimura,

and his buddy on the police force, Mosely. This game is the

complete opposite of a shoot-em-up; you must figure out the

mystery and try to keep Gabe's sanity. Gather the clues, try to

save the girl, and discover Gabe's hidden past.
