  • Death Takes a Holiday

There are two main reasons for liking this movie - Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore. If you are reading this, then you know the movie is about dying - not the scores of death we see in most movies, nameless people shot down or stabbed or karate-chopped by the 'hero/heroine' of the movie. Scores of deaths of the extras who show up to die.

No, this is about an individual who is dying of cancer. A real, awful, messy death.

There's a lot not to like - some over-writing, and a sense that this movie has no where to go. But the acting and the scenery and the intelligent way that the subject is handled make this worth seeing.

  • OK, So It's Not Memento

If you like to be confused and wonder this story is going, you've struck gold with Before I Sleep.

There were a lot of good ideas here - I didn't read the novel. But what they do with them, and how they put it all together is messy. The cast is first rate. The dialogue is good, the settings are first-rate. It's just hard to keep up with the twists and turns. Maybe it would have helped if there were a clearer narrative - an overall look at what was going on.

    But it is worth watching.

The burning question I had is - what happens when she doesn't sleep but stays awake all night? Does she still forget?

  • The Three Marionetki

The first 50-60 minutes of Anora are total drivel - sort of a soft porn movie about nothing, kind of like what all soft porno movies are about. Then the 3 marionetki (stooges) enter the scene and the movie takes off.

The fun keeps on until almost the end of the movie. But the real action takes place in the audiences' heads - we root for this crazy couple and the cinderella story - a new Pretty Woman. Except, Mikey isn't Julia and this isn;t the 90s, it's the godforsaken 2020s and Cinderella works in strip joint and gives lap dances for money.

So there is only one real ending possible - the one that happens.

Nice idea. Don't get carried away with the 'Best Picture' label. It isn't really the best of any year, but still a nice picture that could have come in at 1 hour 45 instead of 2 hours 10 and been a lot better for it.
