  • Not worthy of watching

Sorry. I have to disagree with other reviewers. This was possibly the most boring movie ever made. I know it was the worst I've ever watched. Long, long sequences of nothing--wind blowing, empty rooms, silence--need I go on? OK--even when there was dialog, much of it is mumbled. The film maker was apparently attempting an homage to her mother, but ended up with two hours of sheer boredom.

I have lived in France, frequently visited Belgium, and love my own mother. It was unfortunate that that this mother was captured so starkly and unsympathetically.

The title is "No Home Movie" but it would more appropriately have been named "Unedited Home Movie". I suggest you watch paint dry rather than this misfire.

  • A test of the viewers' tolerance--for lifestyles and bad movies

Travel, particularly to Latin America, is of great interest to me. After reading previous reviews, I was looking forward to seeing Sabor Tropical, although there was an element throughout the reviews that was vaguely troubling to me. After watching the "director's cut", I feel compelled to write a review that will spare others from an awful waste of time and money. First, most of the movie is presented as footage from a hand held video camera--the cinematography is therefore terrible. The perspective of Panama is street scenes behind one of the characters that could have been shot in Newark, New Jersey, or out of a moving car window of sky and fields that could have been in Iowa. The scenes of Carnival were shot at night with a voice over introduction that sounded like it was being read from a travel brochure. Second, the "star" is a narcissistic exhibitionist (to be kind) who is periodically referred to in the movie as resembling Colin Ferrel or James Dean--he doesn't. Finally, production values, story line, writing, acting, and directing are among some the the worst I've ever seen. Spare yourself.

  • Someone needs to warn the world to avoid this one

David Lynch has done some good things, but he has also done some bad things. This is by far his worst. A friend labeled it "David Lynch on mushrooms" The movie has talented performers, and their performances are talented, but the disjointed snippets fail to create a montage--they just bore and confuse. Lynch uses foreign language scenes, double cut backs and every other imaginable gimmick to try to create something artistic--but he fails miserably. Unfortunately, his prior genius fools many into believing that the "emperor really does have new clothes," instead of dismissing this as the craven remains of an artistic bankruptcy.

My advise is to avoid it even if your video store sends it to you for free. You'll never find the pot of gold at the end of this three hour rainbow-less soaking.
