Here we got a another german gem from the twenties. But nothing surnatural here. The last months of Napoléon's life are here described. It's also the fall of a beaten man, left by everyone exerpt a fistful of true friends who go with him on the small island St Helena. The director of the movie, Lupu-Pick, was totally fond of making silent work. So it's not surprising that he comitted suicide when movies began to talk.
A good Tod browning movie but without Lon Chaney. Anyway, the story sounds here quite strange and dark. Mystery and drama fans will be delighted by this story of a young eastern european woman hired to the new world. This one is quite rare on TV, so if you can don't miss it !
It's quite surprising to see Jean Gabin as an engineer directing the work of a tunnel between the USA and Europe. However, the story is well turned with many protagonists surrounding that project. We also have the pleisure to see Gustav Gründgens playing an ugly character. The project may sound a little bit irrealistic but everything is fine in that movie so why should we complain ?
