This film really kicks some serious boo-tay! This is a prequel to the original Ah-nold film that started it all. It features Naru, a young Comanche woman struggling to find her place in the Northern Great Plains village in 1719 where only men can be hunters. Her brother, who lives in the same village as Naru, is a respected hunter and is supportive but not unequivocally so. Naru hones her skills not a minute too soon to face an alien predator.
The movie does a great job establishing Naru's character as a woman who longs to prove herself among her people. The many action scenes are gripping, the special visual effects are absorbing, and the cinematography is breathtaking. Amber Midthunder is a great actress. Don't miss this one.

I'm glad I read some of the other reviews before I watched this film. The recommendation to disavow myself from comparing this story to the animated Disney version was good advice. Okay...no songs, no talking animals...Having done that, I was free to enjoy this gem of a film. The story is well-written and well-acted--and the fight scenes are well choreographed. I cared about the heroine and the plight of her people. Well done!
I had heard of "Breakdown" and flipped past it over the years when it was on TV, but I've never been particularly enamored with Kurt Russell; generally I could take him or leave him, mostly leave him. So 24 years after it was released I finally checked out the DVD from my local library. My wife and I watched it together for our weekly Saturday movie-at-home date and we were both impressed. This is a film in which one actor carries it. Russell's everyman quality absolutely works. He's just a man who loves his wife--who's missing-- and will do anything and everything to get her back. As a husband who adores his wife I was rooting for him every step of the way. The supporting cast is very good as well. My only complaint is I believe Kathleen Quinlan should have been given a little more to do toward the end...of course, she did make quite a statement at the end. A fine action movie Highly recommended!
