Max and Freddy are on the case again. Stolen jewels, murder, vanished suspects, and a dicey fence. Add to the mix the frightened sister of one of the suspects,an aspiring opera star who's the fiance/ boyfriend of the female suspect, and the equally freigtened Freddy (who fears that he's coming down with Scarlet Fever) and you have everything in the mix for a very enjoyable episode. I will confess that I guessed the solution fairly quickly on as there were oddly enough a number of questions that weren't asked (but should have been) so I became suspicious, but if you like the Max & Freddy series, this 2006 entry was as good as they come. Very Enjoyable!
One does have to like a show where in general it keeps on getting better. This episode Is a good one, although perhaps not the best in the series; has a couple of drawbacks and at one point for no particular reason that I can see Max has a bit of a run-in with some Hooligans and comes out far the worse for it and it doesn't really serve the plot a lot except to show him with some head and facial bandages. I'm not really sure why it was done. Two family members from the fire bombed immigrant run restaurant that forms part of the backstory, are not well developed, although they play important minor roles. At the end they're kind of left out and. Aside from that, the story is very intriguing. The female Federal officer and her informant in the neo Nazi group that Max and Freddie are investigating, form the crux of the story. This part is very well done and you're not sure how it was going to go and the solution is not unsatisfying. Clearly the actors portraying, Max and Freddy have really developed into their roles.
They had everything that they needed for a really fantastic series, but the producers or writers decided to get cute. The actors are fantastic, perfect for Hillermann's characters, and they do a great job portraying them, but you can't get around a lousy plot and that's what they have done with this season. The central problem is the creation of this agent Washington person, and the sub-plot created around that. It's the guaranteed F for a story plot line element to make a suspect out of your central police officer. Maybe it's a concession to those who dislike and distrust police, but these were quality books and should not be subject to that political nonsense. Leaphorn is a good guy, not perfect, but not the flawed person they have made him into. These idiots have gone a long way towards ruining Hillermann's characters.
