  • being boring

This film is very boring. Of course if you're silly enough to think that any of Hollywood movie might have no happy end, you will enjoy watching it. You might guess, if Grant and his wooden-headed commandos win etc. If you're clever one, you certainly know from the very beginning that all the terrorists will be abolished (without single sacrifice from good guys'side) and this bomb will not be detonated etc etc etc. Honestly, to show that there were no need to invent over 2 hours of boredom! Well, the only reason why did I watched this movie, was David Suchet's acting. He is a Great actor and his acting was the best in this stupid stereotypical movie. I'm so sorry that such a great actor wasted his time to perform in this GOVNO.

  • this film is perfect!

If you read Anton Chekhov, you will not find this story in his plays. However, this film was made by Chekhov. If you love his works and if you are able to feel their spirit, you will love this wonderful film. Because the main intention was to feel and reproduce this unique atmosphere of Chekhov's works. Mikhalkov did it perfectly. I have to say, it's very hard thing as there are actually very few good films made by Chekhov's plays and later stories. Mikhalkov reproduced this boredom of insignificant people's lives and despair of the main character (Mikhail Platonov). Chekhov is my favorite author and I guess I know what is good and what is bad in those films by his works. If Chekhov's name isn't just a name for you, you HAVE TO get this film and watch it!!! It's the best film by Chekhov I've ever seen.

  • typical anti-Soviet film of the cold war period

Having watched the very first scene (where Russians were singing "Kalinka" and dancing at the bar), I felt sick. I immediately thought, "Oh, one more idiotic film by ignorant ones who know nothing about Russia but any stupid cliches". Some scenes are indeed idiotic. Honestly, I laughed at them alot (for example, the episode where the main character, Mike, was taken to the jail full of water). However, there are some of quite good episodes. In fact, many scenes in a camp ( in 80s those camps weren't called Gulag, btw. Gulag existed in Stalinistic period before early 50s) are reliable.

I guess, this film was made with very clear intention. Typical anti-Soviet propaganda. If you want to get knowledges about Russia (or Soviet Union of that time), don't see this film. There are many stupidities in this film.

The best thing about this film is that all the actors played guards were Russians as they have spoken Russian without terrible accent. Very rare (and pleasant) thing. As for the characters, the only attractive one was Jewish professor Matvei (David Suchet). He was played with great power. This characters imbodies this horror and sadness of being prisoner. The only character I will be keeping in mind for a long time after watching this film.
