This is one of the best giant robot anime (cartoon) of all time. The animation is somewhat dated, but the originality of the characters (specially baron Ashura and viscount pigman) remain quite striking and not easily forgotten. The mechanical beasts are also amazing, not two being alike. As with many other anime, mazinger z (known as tranzor z in the US )suffered from censorship all over the world and is hard to know if the version released in the US is uncut.
This is an odd one. Although the story is a little short on logic, it stands on its own due to the gory effects, which are sometimes extremely bloody. As with all the Italian-made films, the acting is not very good, and the camera is sometimes amateurish, but it compensates with plenty of gore, good cavern sets and a good score, not to mention the tag line, which is either going to make you frown or laugh.
This is one of a kind movie. The story is very simple, 3 friends get lost during a storm and end up in a haunted convent. Although the movie is a little predictable and somewhat moralistic, it keeps you at the edge of your seat all the way long. The movie is intentionally slow and sometimes you wish the characters get out of the tomb - like convent running as fast as they can. As with all the old horror movies, this one depends on acting and atmosphere rather than FX to reach its goal, and it does deliver. You almost can see the shadows walking off the wall and going after the main characters. The monks are quite unnerving, specially the laconic and authoritarian abbot. Although this film is no roller coaster, still is an unforgettable experience
