I rented this on a whim (knew nothing about it) and was blown away. Of course, I was crying my eyes out. I don't feel the film is sentimental but a powerful reminder of the meaninglessness of war. Plus the fact that the film was shot in Montenegro, Yugoslavia and uses many local actors gives it a realistic feel.
I caught this movie EARLY one morning on the Independent Film Channel. Although it's not the greatest film, it is definitely thought-provoking and I thought the visuals were amazing, especially the final images were seared in my memory.
This film was made in 1991. Some may think this is stuff from Frankenstein and not give it another thought. It is now the year 2000 and these kind of animal and medical experiments are being done! After seeing this film, I felt like I had been kicked in the gut! Not many films have that power.

I saw the U.S. premiere of this movie at the DC FilmFest. I was intrigued by the thought of a man who makes movies once every 15 years.
Well, I'll tell you. The people sitting next to me left 10 - 15 minutes into the movie. If you can get through the first 30 minutes, it is worthwhile.
Of course, I am into very surrealistic movies and ones that address the question of what is real and what is not.
After seeing it, the visuals have stayed with me over the years. A powerful movie for the adventurous.
