This is not the kind of movie I'm usually excited to write a review about, but here we are. My wife put this on and I was determined to not like it. She and I are both fans of "Under the Tuscan Sun," and of Tuscany itself, having backpacked through Northern Italy as a young(er) married couple. It was well shot, the scenery was beautiful, and it was nice to see likable characters in wholesome situations (although it would've been good for them to shut up once in a while and maybe not have every problem solved so quickly). It was a little overwrought and formulaic, and you could see the plot "twists" coming from a mile away, but you know what? We absolutely loved it.
I came home to find my wife watching this movie. Her taste is questionable at times, but I sat down anyway. Here are some things I said. "What is this, two out of 10 stars?" "Why is the old man running on the road? It's an RV. Just step aside." "It's a desert. It's full of rocks." "Those rounds have no primers." "When is she going to use her secret power to escape?" " grown men and women came up with this ridiculous concept?" "These are dumb characters written by dumb people." "Dumb." At least "Rubber," a movie about a murderous car tire, was weird and funny. This is why my wife prefers to watch movies alone.
Just watched "Naked Singularity" with a friend. We enjoyed it, but it was definitely not what the poster promised. I was expecting some sort of indie sci-fi thriller, not a New York heist flick. Not sure this is even going to make its budget back. That said, Boyega is pretty good and Skarsgård is an absolute delight.
