This special, filmed and aired the same year of muppet creator Jim Henson's passing, was both sad and uplifting. It was sad watching the characters, and obviously the muppeteers behind them, mourning the loss of Jim. On the other hand, it was nice to know that the muppets would live on. Many people didn't know that Kermit the Frog would continue after Henson, and it isn't until the end that he shows up. Another reassuring sign that the spirit of the Muppets will live on, even if some of them sound a little different.
This movie is filled with cliche plot twists, jokes and situations, the only bait on the hook being Andrew Dice Clay, who was quite a phenomenon at the time. Thankfully, his lame schtick didn't hold up too long. I saw this movie on USA, and I will admit it is sooo bad you have to see it once just to get an idea of how messy pop culture can be.
Forget how MTV and the media portrayed Sonic Youth & Nirvana, or typecasted all their featured friends from the northwest...this is honest a look as you could get of content veteran rockers Sonic Youth and some of the last care-free days of Nirvana. Hilarious behind-the-scenes stuff, great live performances, and hell...they even threw in the Ramones! Right up there with "The Decline of Western Civilization" as far as punk documentaries go.
