This movie is a typical Kamal, Santhana Barathi, Ilayaraaja classic and one of the movies Kamal has done his best without overdoing (which IMO he frequently does).
It's the story of an innocent village widower businessman who leads a simple life along with his children and Mother-in-law. He yields to temptation of moving to the city to make big money. Then starts all the trouble and pain that he has to face. The movie is really intense, dark and tragic.I will say no more for it will spoil the suspense.
Illayaraja has done his part by providing the movie with a great musical score.
Mahanadi is probably one of the few thamizh movie worth the time. 10/10 for the acting, direction and the music.

This movie is one of the few tamil movies that are worth watching multiple times. The movie has to be watched closely and is not your everyday indian masala movie to watch while you do your usual chores.
Kovai Sarala and Kamalahassan have done an amazing job with their Coimbatore (kovai) tamizh accent. There are absolutely no unnecessary scenes and the humour is clean and neat. Thanks to Crazy Mohan's dialogues. This is rare in the current thamizh movies. Illayaraja has done his job in the two songs and the background score which is very apt. Kamalahassan has for once not "hogged" the screen and acted according to Balu Mahendra's direction.
Sathi Leelavathi is one of my all time favourite films.

I saw this movie recently (2002) and was amazed that a simple theme was handled pretty well. Shabna Azmi's acting is good as usual. The editing is pretty poor and the movie moves pretty slowly. The best part of the movie are the three songs and the music by Jagjit Singh. I was hooked to these songs from the very first time I heard them couple of years ago.
I would give this movie a 7/10 on an absolute scale.
