I've never heard of this film before and stumbled upon it on IFC. I love when a movie shows up out of no where, so you have no expectations whatsoever. Of course, I am captivated by Owen Wilson, perhaps because of the way he talks, or the way his face looks perfect and imperfect, or because he seems so stupid and smart at the same time. Everyone likes enigmas. Anyway, this is a fascinating movie, and wonderfully directed by Hampton Fancher. He needs to direct more movies.
I was reviewing the other user comments and surprised at how many people simply view this film as a "great western." If that is all this film represents to you, perhaps it missed its mark. In this Post Sept 11th era, Americans have been called to arms or at least to dig deep within themselves to find their true patriotic self. Movies such as these are forever emblematic of the constant "good versus evil" theme with its companion subplot "when must the pen be put down and the sword wielded in the name of justice." As I watched my President put forth this question to the United Nation, I was reminded of Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne wrestling with the same issues in this film. Everyone agrees violence is not good. Everyone agrees evil must be done away with. Everyone agrees alternative solutions should be explored. But what happens when all alternatives to violence fail to eradicate evil?? Is it then that a person born out of law, order, and justice must finally wield the sword and takes a Stand? Have you decided?
I saw this movie again the other night on TV. I was always a fan of Scanners, but watching it again, even on limited TV, made me realize how effective the movie is, even when compared to more contemporary horror movies. The story line is brilliant, and the direction very clever. My only criticism is where did they find the actor who portrayed "cameron vale"? I think he needs more acting lesson. Otherwise, a good solid horror film.
