Michael Jackson Biopic Finds Its Jackson 5
Image
The Jackson 5 have found their harmony once again for the upcoming biopic “Michael” from director Antoine Fuqua and Oscar-winning producer Graham King.

After a worldwide search led filmmakers to cast Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, as the King of Pop, with 9-year-old Juliano Krue Valdi as the younger Michael, fans have been eagerly waiting to see who would round out the rest of the Jackson family.

The film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, is currently in production. Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo assumes the role of family patriarch Joe Jackson with Nia Long as mother Katherine Jackson, plus Miles Teller as lawyer John Branca.

Now, the eight actors who will portray Jackson’s four brothers — who come together to form the massively popular singing group the Jackson 5 — have been revealed: Jamal R. Henderson plays Jermaine Jackson in the film’s later years, while Jayden Harville plays the younger version.

Disney+'s Failed Harry Potter Movie Competition Added To PVOD After Being Pulled From Streamer
Image
Multiple Disney+ movies, including Artemis Fowl, have found new homes on PVOD platforms after being removed from the streaming service earlier this year. The removal of movies and shows from Disney+ was motivated by profit, with Disney receiving a $1.5 billion write-off for the content they removed. While most of the removed movies are now available through PVOD, the fate of the still-missing TV series is uncertain, leaving viewers unable to find these shows.

Multiple Disney+ movies have found new homes on PVOD platforms, including the streaming service's failed Harry Potter competitor Artemis Fowl. The movie was one of many removed from Disney's streaming platform earlier this year, alongside popular TV shows like Willow. However, in late September, six removed films - including notable titles such as Crater and The One and Only Ivan - were added to premium video-on-demand services like Amazon and Vudu.

Now, TheWrap reports even more removed...

Le cratère (2023)
Disney Quietly Adds Original Movies Removed From Disney+ to Paid Platforms
Le cratère (2023)
Disney started pulling content from its direct-to-consumer streaming platform Disney+ earlier this year, following the streaming content bubble bursting spectacularly. Now some of it is beginning to reappear – on paid platforms.

Seasons of shows were unceremoniously zapped from the app, along with several high profile made-for-Disney+ movies, including “Crater,” which was erased a little more than a month after debuting on the platform. Those movies are back – and available to rent or buy on the PVOD platform of your choice

Disney didn’t publicize this; they just showed up with as little fanfare as when they were removed in the first place.

The removed titles now available to rent (for around $4) or buy (for $20) are “Artemis Fowl,” “Better Nate Than Never,” “Crater,” “Cheaper by the Dozen,” “Flora & Ulysses,” “Stargirl,” “Hollywood Stargirl,” “The One and Only Ivan,” “Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made” and documentary “Wolfgang.” Disney+ original films that have...

Hilary Swank in Alaska Daily (2022)
Following the cancellations of ABC’s “Alaska Daily” and “The Company You Keep” in May, both series are being pulled off Hulu as part of Disney’s ongoing review and removal of content in an effort to cut costs.

Other impacted shows include the Rashida Jones comedy “Angie Tribeca,” NBC’s “Blindspot,” Samantha Bee and Jason Jones’ “The Detour” and TNT’s “The Last Ship,” which will be removed on July 1.

HBO Max's Purge Of Shows Like Westworld Has Been 'A Win' For Tubi [Atx]
Image
The entire media landscape is in a serious transition period right now. Yes, streaming is the future (and that is why the Writer's Guild of America is on strike right now), but that future is probably going to look more like traditional TV than anyone thought a handful of years ago.

Part of that has to do with ad-supported, video-on-demand services (AVOD) such as Tubi, which have become quite popular in recent years -- particularly for those of us who are tired of paying for any number of subscription-based services such as Netflix. But Tubi, in particular, has oddly benefited from what has been generated by other major services on the market, particularly HBO Max (before it simply became Max).

I was on hand at the Atx Television Festival for a panel called "Fast, AVOD, and the Return to Ad-Supported TV," where Samuel Harowitz, the VP of Content Acquisition and Partnerships at Tubi,...

Arrested Development Cast & Season 5 Guest Star Guide
Image
The Bluth family returned final time in Arrested Development season 5, which is available to watch on Netflix, and the huge Arrested Development cast amazingly remained intact. Arrested Development season 1 arrived in 2003 and while the show struggled somewhat in the ratings, it was acclaimed for its impeccable comic writing and ensemble cast. When the show ended with Arrested Development season 3 the cast, particularly Jason Bateman, began to pop up in multiple TV series and movies.

Netflix brought Arrested Development back for a fourth season in 2013, but while fans were initially glad to see the show return, season 4 received mixed reviews. Scheduling issues led to a strange structure where several episodes focused on a single Bluth family member (via Buzzfeed). The show later again returned for Arrested Development season 5, which was split into two eight-episode parts. While season 5 was polarizing too, it hilariously ends in the only way it could, with fantastic...

12 Movies Removed From Disney Plus After Pledge To Purge Streaming Content
Image
Following Disney's confirmation that some movies and TV shows would be leaving Disney+, the streaming platform has removed 12 movies from its catalog. Disney announced in mid-May that 40 shows would be removed from Disney+ and Hulu, including some popular Disney+ original series like Willow. The decision to remove streaming content appears to be a cost-cutting measure by Disney, as well as a response to internal changes to their content creation strategy.

Now, Decider reports that 12 films have left Disney+ in the midst of Disney's content purge. Included are some star-studded movies, including the Bryan Cranston-led family film The One and Only Ivan. All the films removed are Disney+ originals, meaning it will be difficult to find them elsewhere, if at all. Check out the list of removed content below:

Marvel's Runaways Gets Abruptly Removed from Hulu and Disney+
Image
You can no longer stream Marvel's Runaways on Hulu or Disney+, as the show has been removed from streaming services. It was recently reported that a purge was taking place at Disney+ with several movies and shows getting removed for the sake of cutting costs. Per /Film, it's since been revealed that Runaways has also been pulled, no longer available on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally as it had been up to this point. As the show hasn't been given a physical release, Runaways is now inaccessible, and the news has some fans of the show feeling unhappy.

A variety of other titles have been removed by Disney+, including Willow, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Turner & Hooch, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, The Mysterious Benedict Society, Magic Camp, Stargirl, Just Beyond, and many more. Mysterious Benedict Star Asks For Help Burning the Disney+ Show to DVD
Image
Actor Kristen Schaal recently responded to the imminent removal of The Mysterious Benedict Society from the Disney+ streaming service, asking fans for tips on how to save it for personal viewing.

On social media, Schaal wrote, "[The Mysterious Benedict Society is] getting pulled tomorrow. Anyone know how to burn a dvd off a streamer so I can show my daughter this show someday?" While some fans responded to the actor with tips on how to copy a video from a streaming service and burn it on a disc, others expressed shock that the show's own actors were unable to get a legitimate copy of the show themselves, meaning they will no longer be unable to view it either after it is removed from Disney+.

Bryan Cranston Shares Emotional Response to Film Getting Pulled from Disney+
Image
Disney+ is planning a purge of many movie and TV series titles from its streaming service in the near future, this as part of the company's continued efforts to cut costs. Shows like The Mysterious Benedict Society and Willow are getting pulled, and that has gotten a lot of fans perturbed, though they'll be joined by a variety of movies and documentaries. Among them is the movie The One and Only Ivan, a family film directed by Thea Sharrock that was written by Mike White. Bryan Cranston starred in one of the lead roles with the film also featuring the voices of Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito, and Helen Mirren. Inspired by a true story, The One and Only Ivan is about a gorilla in captivity who devises a plan to escape with his new elephant pal.

Upon learning that the film will be removed from streaming availability, Cranston...

Westworld (2016)
Disney Removes Various Titles from Disney+ and Hulu, Including Willow, Big Shot, & Dollface
Westworld (2016)
Disney is going there, you guys.

As previously teased during the company's quarter one earnings call, the company is purging several titles from its streaming services, Disney+ and Hulu.

The practice has become common in recent months, with HBO Max leading the charge, wiping several projects from existence.

Undoubtedly, fans and creatives are struggling with the concept, but maybe some of the affected shows could show up elsewhere.

"We will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion," Disney's chief financial officer, Christine McCarthy, said during the earnings call.

Westworld, The Nevers, and other HBO fare popped back up on Fast services shortly after the controversial decision.

But for some shows, this could be the death knell that could be the difference whether new fans find them down the line.

Initially, people purchased physical media, and with the rise of streaming,...

‘Willow’, Jeff Goldblum, and other titles removed from Disney’s streaming services
Image
Disney did a little (late) spring cleaning of its streaming services this week, removing several properties from Disney+ and Hulu. Among those that will go on May 26 include some high profile recent shows like “Willow,” “Y: The Last Man,” “Dollface,” and “The World According to Jeff Goldblum.” What makes this troubling for many home viewers who may have been fans (or even stans!) of the affected programs is that, in most cases, there are no Blu-ray/DVD options. In the old days you could always hit record on your Vcr to build a personal library, but it’s not so easy to capture material from streaming—and the whole point of streaming is not needing to do that, right?

As per The Verge, Disney’s cost-cutting is due to a reduction in Disney+ subscribers, to the tune of 4 million in 2023. While the company will have to pay a “content impairment charge” of over $1.5 billion,...

R.L. Stine Horror Series “Just Beyond” Is Being Deleted from Disney+ This Month
Image
For Halloween 2021, Disney+ entered the world of R.L. Stine with “Just Beyond,” an 8-episode anthology series based on Stine’s line of comic books. The series never got a second season, with Disney+ leaving its fate hanging in the balance these past two years.

Unfortunately, we’ve learned this week that Stine’s “Just Beyond” will be one of many Disney+ original projects that are soon being deleted from the streaming service entirely.

As The Hollywood Reporter explains, “Disney is following Warner Bros. Discovery and removing under-performing titles from its streaming services in a bid to write off nearly $2 billion from its bottom line. In all, there are more than 30 shows that will be removed starting next week from the platforms in this first round of reductions. The titles will vanish starting May 26.”

Willow Writer Blasts Disney for Delisting the Series: 'Absolutely Cruel'
Image
Willow writer John Bickerstaff just blasted Disney for delisting the show from Disney+, branding the move "absolutely cruel."

Bickerstaff took to Twitter to voice his displeasure with Disney, noting that Willow was being removed from Disney+ less than six months after its final episode aired. The scribe's tweet also suggested that Willow's treatment was representative of the increasingly harsh climate of the wider film and TV industry. Bickerstaff was one of several writers who contributed to Willow and is credited with co-writing the revival series' third episode, "The Battle of the Slaughtered Lamb," with Wendy Mericle.

Disney Begins Removing Streaming Content Next Week, 40 Shows Going From Disney+ & Hulu Revealed
Image
Willow and Y: The Last Man are among the titles that Disney will be removing from Disney+ and Hulu. As the streaming industry continues to adapt, certain services have begun to pull content off their platforms, including their own original programming, as a way to cut costs. HBO Max used this strategy with the removal of Westworld, The Nevers, and a number of other popular series. It was recently confirmed that Disney would be taking the same approach with Disney+ and Hulu.

Deadline has now revealed that during a recent Disney earnings call, it was revealed which titles will be removed from Disney+ and Hulu on May 26. A number of well-received television series, movies, and making-of specials will be removed. On Disney+, this includes Willow, The Making of Willow, and The One and Only Ivan. Here's All Of The Disney+ And Hulu Shows Getting Pulled Off Streaming
Image
Add Disney+ and Hulu to the list of streamers whose complete slate of original shows and films is no longer guaranteed to be there the next time you go looking for it. According to Vulture, the Disney-owned streamers are set to remove some titles from their catalog as soon as next week. The list of titles includes the high-budget "Willow" sequel series, the Danny Devito-led animated series "Little Demon," and the highly-anticipated yet swiftly canceled comic adaptation, "Y: The Last Man," among others.

While this content purge follows in the footsteps of Warner Bros Discovery's much-criticized decision to make select titles disappear from streaming for tax reasons last year, Vulture reports that the Disney+ and Hulu titles are likely set to resurface elsewhere — a guarantee that HBO Max was slow to make when its content started to disappear. Pierce Brosnan and Adam Devine Team Up for Netflix's Action-Comedy The Out-Laws
Image
Pierce Brosnan will team up with Workaholics star Adam Devine for Netflix's upcoming action-comedy movie The Out-Laws. Devine is also on board to produce with Happy Madison. Tyler Spindel (The Wrong Missy) is directing using a screenplay penned by Evan Turner and Ben Zazove. Isaac Horne is executive producing the project.

Per Deadline, The Out-Laws follows "Owen Browning (Devine), a straight-laced bank manager about to marry the love of his life, Parker. When his bank is held up by the infamous Ghost Bandits during his wedding week, he believes his future in-laws who just arrived in town, are the infamous Out-Laws."

Details on Brosnan's role aren't clear, but given the details of the plot, it seems possible he'll be playing Devine's father-in-law. The veteran actor is of course best known for his turn as James Bond in a series of movies starting with 1995's GoldenEye. His more recent credits include The Misfits,...

‘Magic Camp’ Review: Adam DeVine Stars in Disney+’s Most Uninspired Original Yet
Image
Just nine months into its existence, and Disney+ original programming has already run the full gamut, from critically beloved series like “The Mandalorian” to theatrical cast-offs best left forgotten. One piece of programming mostly missing so far: , family-friendly fare to fill a lazy Friday night. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, the lack of imagination on display in Mark Waters’ “Magic Camp” is almost more depressing than the incomprehensible weirdness of Kenneth Branagh’s Ya flop. At least that film was trying for something.

The best warning of what’s to come arrives in the opening credits: the film comes from six screenwriters, and while many of the half-dozen scribes (not counting the two additional with only “story by” credits) it took to write “Magic Camp” are quite talented folk, little of that magic makes its way into this feature. Final credits don’t even include Steve Martin,...

It’s Friday, and you know what that means, Disney lovers? Yes, Disney Plus has just added its weekly haul of new content. This time, there are 17 fresh titles going up on the site. These include a couple of major blockbusters, a batch of new TV episodes, a lot of National Geographic docu-series and a D+ original movie.

Meanwhile, Disney Channel sequel Zombies 2 has been added to the site, Muppets Now reaches its third episode and nature fans have the likes of India’s Wild Leopards,...

Streaming This Weekend: Project Power, Magic Camp, Spree and More
Image
If nothing changes (and if 2020 has taught us anything it probably will), movie theaters will be opening en masse in the U.S. within the next couple of weeks. Does that mean people are ready to flock back to theaters? It's hard to say. For now, we mostly have what can be enjoyed from home. Fortunately, this week has no shortage of new releases to enjoy.

Netflix has a new superhero flick coming down the pipeline and Disney+ is bringing a would-be theatrical release to streaming instead. We also have a couple of new horror flicks, a Joe Bob Briggs special and Judd Apatow's latest comedy finally hitting a major streaming service. Here are this week's streaming selections.

‘Magic Camp’ Trailer: Adam DeVine Does His Best Jack Black Impression in Disney+ Comedy

We first wrote about Disney’s Magic Camp movie back in 2014, when comedy legend Steve Martin had co-written the screenplay for a film which would have seen him play a man who returns to a magic-themed camp he attended as a child, this time as a counselor. But unfortunately, that version of the movie disappeared in a […]

‘Magic Camp’ Trailer: Adam Devine & Gillian Jacobs Are Rival Magicians In New Disney+ Film From ‘Mean Girls’ Director
Image
In less than a year, Disney+ went from non-existence to becoming one of the biggest streaming platforms on the planet, with just over 60 million paid subscribers reported earlier this month. And in addition to its plethora of Pixar, Marvel, and “Star Wars” films, the streaming service is also pumping out quite a bit of originals aimed at a younger audience (i.e. the kids who demand their parents keep a Disney+ subscription).

Official Trailer for Disney's Campy Magicians Comedy 'Magic Camp'
Gillian Jacobs, Adam Devine, Cole Sand, Isabella Crovetti, Josie Totah, Izabella Alvarez, Bianca Grava, Hayden Crawford, and Nathaniel Logan McIntyre in Magic Camp (2020)
"Be prepared for anything." Disney has revealed an official trailer for an extra campy comedy titled Magic Camp, debuting direct to streaming on Disney+ this weekend. This is the latest fun-for-everyone comedy from filmmaker Mark Waters, the director of Freaky Friday, Mean Girls, Just Like Heaven, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Mr. Popper's Penguins. A group of misfit campers help a down-on-his-luck magician rediscover his love of magic in Magic Camp, a heartwarming comedy about finding joy and confidence in self-acceptance. Adam Devine stars as Andy, who attempts to reboot his love for magic (and for competition) at the camp. This also stars Gillian Jacobs, Aldis Hodge, J.J. Totah, Rochelle Aytes, Rosalind Chao, Michael Hitchcock, Rebecca Metz, and Jeffrey Tambor as the camp's owner Roy Preston. This looks as terribly cheesy and as cliche as expected, but still fun to see a movie about magic. Here's the...

Disney Plus Is Adding 18 New Movies/TV Shows This Week
Disney Plus subscribers may have just spent their weekend working their way through all the new content that arrived on the streaming service last Friday, so let’s look ahead to what’s headed to the site at the end of this week. It’s an even larger haul than the last one, comprising 18 movies and TV shows. There’s a little bit of everything coming this Friday, too, including a ton of National Geographic content, some new stuff for the children and a quartet of major movies – two previously released big hits and two Disney + Originals.

As part of the site’s Summer Movie Nights season, Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp lands on Friday. With the addition of this 2018 sequel starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, that leaves just three McU films that are not on D+ – The Incredible Hulk and the two Spider-Man flicks.

Another smash-hit drops...

Disney Plus Has 9 Big Original Movies/TV Shows Coming In August
Image
Over the past few months, Disney Plus has cemented itself within the streaming world as a force to be reckoned with. With Marvel movies, The Mandalorian and now a unique recording of the acclaimed Broadway musical Hamilton inside its library, among many other things, the service is here to stay – much to the chagrin of Netflix.

Although Disney Plus adds a smaller amount of content to its collection than most of its competitors, the company certainly packs a punch. For proof of that, look no further than August, in which Disney’s popular service is set to upload a handful of interesting new shows and films.

To begin with, we’ve got Muppets Now. The very first original, unscripted series to be produced by The Muppets Studio, it’ll center around Scooter as he tries to ensure that new episodes of Muppets Now get to streaming on time. The format...

2 Movies Meant For Theaters Will Now Release On Disney+ On The Same Day
Image
The platform may have raced past 50 million subscribers in virtually no time at all, but Disney Plus still frequently finds itself facing criticism for a relative lack of original content. The Mandalorian and more recently, Hamilton may have generated plenty of buzz online, but so far the streaming service has largely been sold on the strength of the Mouse House’s back catalogue.

Of course, there are a lot of high-profile projects in the works including the roster of Marvel Cinematic Universe shows, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, reboots for Home Alone, Inspector Gadget, The Mighty Ducks and many more, but there hasn’t exactly been a lot of original feature-length movies to keep viewers occupied lately.

When you’ve got brands as popular as the McU, Star Wars and Pixar at your disposal, then you can understand why Disney are happy to take their time when it comes to expanding their lineup of in-house projects,...

Judi Dench, Colin Farrell, Josh Gad, Nonso Anozie, Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, and Ferdia Shaw in Artemis Fowl (2020)
Disney+ New Releases: August 2020
Judi Dench, Colin Farrell, Josh Gad, Nonso Anozie, Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, and Ferdia Shaw in Artemis Fowl (2020)
In the new pandemic era of streaming entertainment, Disney+ has seemingly built up its own strategy. Every summer month has thus far been highlighted by one major movie and then complemented with the typical Disney content.

For August 2020, the big original movie of the hour is Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe. This will be the second Phineas and Ferb movie and the first to make its premiere via streaming. The film premieres on August 28 and finds the Phineas and Ferb gang back together again as they set out across the galaxy to rescue Candace.

Two other Disney+ originals of note this month are Howard (Aug. 7)and The One and Only Ivan (Aug. 14). Howard is a documentary about Howard Ashman, the unheralded lyricist behind Disney classics like Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. The One and Only Ivan is a film based on the book of the same...
