Imagine an acerbic love child miraculously spawned by Addison DeWitt of “All About Eve” and Waldo Lydecker of “Laura,” with John Simon serving as midwife, and you will be prepared for Jimmy Erskine, the viciously witty and mercilessly demanding title character played with utterly delicious flamboyance by Ian McKellen in “The Critic.” Directed by Anand Tucker (“Shopgirl”) and written by Patrick Marber (“Notes on a Scandal”), the film is a heady brew of period thriller, compelling melodrama and jet-black comedy, and the second most remarkable thing about it is how seamlessly these diverse elements gel.
Even more remarkable, however, is McKellen’s multifaceted portrayal of the man aptly known as “The Monster,” both behind his back and to his face, in the film’s world of 1930s London theater.
Erskine takes unseemly delight in savagely shredding the productions (and performances) he finds lacking, and the physical appearances of actors he deems unattractive.

Djimon Hounsou is one of the most prolific actors working in Hollywood today. In the comic book movie realm alone, he's starred in Constantine, Guardians of the Galaxy, Aquaman, Captain Marvel, Shazam!, Black Adam, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
He also received "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar nominations for his roles in Blood Diamond and In America. Despite finding that level of success, the actor recently looked back on his career in an interview with CNN and revealed he's "struggling financially to make a living."
"I am still struggling trying to make a living," Hounsou admitted. "After 30 years...maybe the first 10 years was trying to acclimate myself to the industry, to establish myself. But I’ve been in this business making films now for over two decades and with two Oscar nominations and been in many blockbuster films, and yet, I’m still struggling financially to make a living. I’m definitely underpaid.

The horror genre is known for its scares and tension, but many incredible horror movies are more atmospheric than they are inherently scary. In fact, some of the best horror movies of all time are known for their terrifying environments. While these horror movies do not suffer in any way by having such engaging environments, there are several in which the fear factor of the setting stands out against the story.
This is incredibly common in horror films with the most wild premises, but it includes more horror than just the most incredulous. In fact, this extends to films in all sorts of genres, including different obscure horror genres. Regardless, the environments built up in horror films like The Ritual and Rosemary's Baby are legendary, even more frightening than the actual films themselves.

Traditional horror movies with an easy-to-follow plot, relatable characters, and a healthy dose of scares are probably every horror fan’s comfort food. That’s because, when it comes to horror, the experimental and abstract genre pieces can be very hit or miss. In 2024 alone, I have come across In A Violent Nature, and I loved its take on the slasher subgenre. Bramayugam’s exploration of casteism and classism on a monochrome canvas was excellent. Oddity’s portrayal of revenge was haunting. And Outside’s use of the zombie subgenre to talk about the patriarchy was worthy of all the applause in the world. Then you have movies like Night Swim, The Devil’s Bath, Consumed, Baghead, The Hangman, Munjya, MadS, Mr. Crocket, and Don’t Move, which undoubtedly have a good concept at their core, but the execution is simply too muddled to be impactful. I am sad to say that...

When The Old Guard began streaming on Netflix, not many would have anticipated that it would go on to become one of the top 10 most successful original launches in the platform’s history. It did, making it a project Netflix was willing to make a sequel of. But that wasn’t the only thing the movie was memorable for.
Charlize Theron, portraying the role of Andy would slay yet again in an action role, a phenomenon that was being repeated constantly. Netflix's Stranger Things melds many genres together. It's a family show that has comedy, romance and that coming-of-age energy to it. Of course, it's a sci-fi and horror series at its core. This is due to creatures breaching from the Upside Down and making incursions in a story that has the likes of Stephen King and other masters of horror calling for more.
The terrifying premise of Stranger Things resulted in many deaths in Hawkins, Indiana, as Eleven and her team of teenage heroes coalesced and fought back. This resulted in a few action spectacles that kicked things up a notch. Here are the best ones that reiterate how high-octane and intense Stranger Things can get.

“If it's in a word or it's in a look, you can't get rid of the Babadook.” So the story goes, and indeed, this sinister being has proven to have remarkable staying power. It’s now ten years since The Babadook was first released, and he’s returning to cinemas all over the world in celebration. Though he had his origins in highly successful 2005 short The Monster, his creator, Jennifer Kent, tells me that she never had an inkling of how her film would be received.
“I genuinely didn't. You always hope as a filmmaker that you're going to make something that people see and, you know, most films then come and go, but for it to have this afterlife has been so exciting. I'm quite a private person, so to be honest I had to be coaxed into celebrating its ten year anniversary, but...

Way back in the 80s and 90s, there was one spin-off horror genre that consistently produced some highly memorable movies, often for better… Or worse; Comedy Horror. The genre has been hugely popular ever since it introduced audiences to films such as Dr. Pickle and Mr. Pryde and The Monster from the mid 20s, all the way to classic titles such as Young Frankenstein and The Rocky Horror Picture Show from the 70s. In the early 2000s the genre started poking fun at horror movies in general, plus specifically the Scream series, with the popular but ridiculous Scary Movie franchise. While those movies were fun, they were basically a polished piss-take of better movies and lacked the kitsch and schlocky fun of earlier, more inventive entries. Which brings us nicely to the Re-Animator series, which has its roots firmly set in those 20s and 30s flicks, with a sprinkle of...

The Vourdalak hits theaters on June 28, 2024, offering a unique and atmospheric vampire experience for horror fans. French filmmaker Adrien Beau is excited to partner with Oscilloscope for the U.S. release of his debut feature film. Die-hard horror fans will recognize The Vourdalak story from the 1963 anthology film, Black Sabbath.
Nosferatu might be getting ready to scare audiences on Christmas day 2024, but fans of Gothic vampire stories wont have to wait too much longer to get their fix, as the French period piece The Vourdalak is getting ready to hit theaters later this month thanks to landing a U.S. distribution deal. Based on Russian novelist Aleksey Tolstoys Gothic novella, The Family of the Vourdalak, which was first published in 1839, the story predates Bram Stokers 'Dracula' by nearly 60 years. The Vourdalak premiered during the International Critics Week section of the 80th Venice International Film Festival last year.

Bertino's 2020 hit, The Dark and the Wicked, is a must-see psychological horror film with a twisty ending exclusively on Shudder. The Dark and the Wicked, though underrated, outshines even The Strangers, offering a disturbing atmosphere and unsettling folk horror experience. Bertino's return to form with The Dark and the Wicked showcases his strength in creating a deeply effective and downright scary horror film.
Best known for writing and directing the 2008 sleeper hit The Strangers, filmmaker Bryan Bertino also made one of the best horror movies of the 2020s and hardly anyone saw it. With the release of the poorly received The Strangers: Chapter 1, the first installment of an intended relaunch of the cult classic franchise, horror fans are likely looking for a more compelling watch. Ever since television replaced radio as the most popular broadcast medium in the 1950s, watching TV shows has been part of the daily lives of an ever-growing number of people. Many memorable scenes and recurring themes from the most popular shows are now pop culture references. From hilarious jokes in comedy classics to shocking deaths in beloved dramas, the most iconic TV show scenes are instantly recognizable for fans of the shows.
In comedy, Friends and Sex and the City are examples of shows with countless unforgettable scenes. But Ross saying "Rachel" when he shouldn't and the four girls talking about a taboo subject in the back of a taxi are definitely the ones that are more often mentioned as the funniest and best in those shows. Meanwhile, in the sci-fi future classic Stranger Things, the series' most iconic moment is as dark as it is amusing. These celebrated scenes...

Paul Schrader shed tears as his new film “Oh, Canada” earned a four-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival on Friday night.
Jacob Elordi was notably absent from the premiere because he is filming Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” in which he stars as The Monster. After the ovation finished, Schrader addressed Elordi not being there, saying: “I’m very happy with Richard, Uma, Jake — not here with us –and it all worked out. Im very happy to be back here on the Croisette.”
Elordi, whose star continues to rise after acclaimed turns in “Saltburn” and “Priscilla,” made his Cannes debut last year in Sean Price Williams’ road movie “The Sweet East.”

Peter Sarsgaard Teases Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein Film: ‘A Romantic, Wild, Punk Monster Movie’
As Hollywood productions begin to pick up steam again, it seems as if everyone in the film industry has Frankenstein on their minds.
One of the year’s first studio releases was Diablo Cody and Zelda Williams’ “Lisa Frankenstein,” which reimagined Mary Shelley’s classic novel of reanimation gone wrong as a contemporary teen comedy. That film will be followed by two other high profile adaptations that entered production this month: Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” which stars Oscar Isaac as the mad scientist alongside Mia Goth and Jacob Elordi as The Monster; and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming sophomore feature, which reportedly stars Christian Bale as a version of Frankenstein’s monster who pursues love in 1930s Chicago in a riff on “The Bride of Frankenstein.”

Jacob Elordi is involved in a police investigation in his native Australia after allegedly assaulting a radio producer on Saturday.

According to Fox’s account of the situation on the show Monday morning, he asked Elordi if he could have some of his bathwater for Jackie O for her birthday — a reference to a viral scene in “Saltburn.” Elordi asked Fox to stop filming and delete the footage, and then the situation allegedly escalated.

When we recently compiled our list of science fiction movies based on true stories, one film that didn’t make the list was Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer. After all, the technology behind the nuclear bomb can no longer be said to be undiscovered, sadly. Nonetheless, Oppenheimer remains the archetypal science fiction story—one about a mad scientist who devises a new machine that changes the world through terrible unforeseen consequences. He is an an American Prometheus, yes, but also a regular Yankee Frankenstein. More than that though, by ushering in the nuclear age, Oppenheimer may have lit the fuse on the genre of cinematic science fiction.
It is hardly a new observation, but walk into any cinema in the 1950s and you will find no shortage of creatures, monsters, or occasionally people grown to giant size by the mysterious power of radiation. You don’t need to look too closely...

French President Emmanuel Macron made history on Tuesday as he appointed 34-year-old politician Gabriel Attal as France’s youngest ever prime minister.
Macron has a complex relationship with France’s cinema industry, where his pension reforms, attitude to cultural funding and support of Gérard Depardieu have come under fire from some quarters, but his new prime minister comes with interesting film world connections.
The new rising star of French politics is the son of late lawyer and film producer Yves Attal, who took credits on Pedro Almodóvar’s High Heels, Roberto Benigni’s The Monster and Bernardo Bertolucci’s Stealing Beauty.
Attal’s mother Marie de Couriss also worked in a production company.
As a teenager, Attal had a small role in Christophe Honoré’s 2008 drama The Beautiful Person co-starring Louis Garrel and Léa Seydoux.

When Eminem Apologized To Rihanna For His Diss Track Supporting Her Abusive Ex-bf Chris Brown ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Eminem is hands down one of the best rappers of the current times and has inspired many musicians. The rapper, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, is known not only for his exceptional work but also for his talent for getting into several controversies. He once received a lot of flak for allegedly siding with Chris Brown, who was charged with domestic assault on RiRi in 2009. However, the rapper and RiRi have a good relationship and collaborated on multiple songs.
Marshall and the Fenty Beauty owner have collaborated on the song Numb from the 2012 album of the songstress Unapologetic. In 2013, they again came together and worked on Marshall’s LP 2 on the song The Monster. Both of them are established artists in the music industry. Hence, one can imagine the success they got from these two collaborations.
