“Norway” director Yannis Veslemes’ “She Loved Blossoms More,” which will world premiere at the Tribeca Festival, has unveiled its first teaser.

The film follows three brothers who build an unusual time machine in order to bring their long-dead mother back to life. When their delusional father comes into the picture, the experiments go awry, and they descend into a psychedelic hellscape where the past and present fuse in a comedic yet disturbing exploration of grief.

“Norway” had an extended festival run including Karlovy Vary and Fantasporto and won a Fipresci prize at Thessaloniki.

“She Loved Blossoms More” is produced by Fenia Cossovitsa (“Two Tickets to Greece”) and executive producers include Christos V. Konstantakopoulos (“The Lobster”), Ant Timpson (“Come to Daddy”) and Andreas Zoupanos Kritikos (“Knock at the Cabin”).

Denise Gough was “over” the idea of nudity and sex scenes for actresses on film, and in the indie romance “Monday” there are quite a lot of them. But Gough says she knew her co-star Sebastian Stan would be a trustworthy partner on screen.

One of Stan and Gough’s first moments is the two of them curled up asleep and naked on a public beach, leading to them eventually riding through the streets of Greece nude on a moped. But in speaking with TheWrap, both Stan and Gough said “Monday” director Argyris Papadimitropoulos earned their trust after seeing his film “Suntan” and knew that he wouldn’t “pull any punches.”

Four years ago, the Greek film-maker Argyris Papadimitropoulos made a vivid impression with Suntan: a bleakly hilarious Death-In-Venice-type affair set in a seaside resort, featuring a sad middle-aged man who tortures himself with his tragic infatuation with a beautiful young woman on holiday.

Here is his follow-up, in the English language, featuring Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes from Marvel’s Captain America movies) and the Irish stage star Denise Gough, with a script co-written by the director with the award-winning British dramatist Rob Hayes (who worked with Michaela Coel on the TV comedy Chewing Gum). Produced by Christos V. Konstantakopoulous, Damian Jones and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, the English language feature stars Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough. Papadimitropoulos’ sophomore film Wasted Youth (2011) premiered in Rotterdam as did his third feature, the breakout Suntan (2016), which also played SXSW. The first-look image from Greek director Argyris Papadimitropoulos’ “Monday,” starring Sebastian Stan – best known for “I, Tonya” and the “Captain America” movies – and “Colette’s” Denise Gough, has been released. Protagonist Pictures will launch international sales on the pic in Berlin.

“Monday” follows the story of Mickey (Stan) and Chloe (Gough), two Americans in their mid-thirties living in Athens, who “meet in the heat of summer one whirlwind weekend,” according to a statement. “When Chloe’s time in Greece is drawing to a close, she decides to give up her high-flying job back home and explore whether one weekend’s passion can stand the reality of the inevitable Monday.”

Principal photography recently wrapped on the film, which was co-written by Papadimitropoulos and Rob Hayes. It is the director’s fourth feature, following “Suntan,” which won best film at the Edinburgh Film Festival.

The film, which played in the Rotterdam, Brussels, Edinburgh, SXSW, Odessa and Jeonju festivals, was also awarded best screenplay, best actor for Makis Padimitriou and best supporting actress for Elli Tringou.

The Faliro House, Marni and Oxymoron production is a bitter sweet drama about a middle-aged doctor on a Greek island whose life turns upside down when he gets embroiled with a group of hedonist tourists.

Just released from prison, surly, boozy Mary pines for her bridezilla Bff who has moved on. Now she needs a date for the wedding and rarely has someone looked for love with less interest. Thornton directs a scuzzily radiant Seana Kerslake as the miserably mad Mary, wildly unpredictable and widely misunderstood, in a film that feels like the love child of Weekend and Once.

First edition of pan-European online festival is a joint initiative between Arte and Festival Scope.

Serbian actress and director Mirjana Karanović’s A Good Wife has won the €50,000 audience award at the first edition of ArteKino, a new pan-European online film festival launched by Franco-German broadcaster Arte and Paris-based digital film platform Festival Scope.

Running September 30 to October 9, the event showcased 10 European feature films. The organisers released 50,000 free online tickets in 44 European countries.

A Good Wife marks a directorial debut for Karanović who also stars in the film as a happily-married woman living in an upscale suburb of Belgrade whose life is overturned on discovering her perfect husband has a dark past.

The film was produced by This & That Productions, Deblokada, Nukleus Film Production and is sold internationally by Films Boutique.

The €50,000 prize money – sponsored by Nespresso - goes to Karanović and Film Boutique to help distribute the film internationally.

A Good Wife...

Hedi won best film, while Matt Johnson won best director for Operation Avalanche.

The Tunisian-French-Belgian co-production Hedi by Mohamed Ben Attia has won the best film award, the Golden Athena, at the 22nd Athens International Film Festival (September 22-October 2).

The film was co-produced by Tanit Films, Nomadis Images and the Dardenne brothers production outlet Les Films du Fleuve.

Majd Mastoura stars in the lead role as a young man who tries to break loose from his dominant mother and some of Tunisia’s more conservative social norms.

The film debuted at Berlin Film Festival 2016, winning the best first film award and a best actor prize for Mastoura.

The Aiff awards were decided by a five-member international jury presided over by the BFI programmes curator Nicola Gallani. The jury included German film critic Julia Teichmann (Film Dienst), French producer Sylvia Perel and her compatriot film critic Bernard Nave (Jeune Cinema).

Franco-German broadcaster Arte and Paris-based digital film platform Festival Scope have launched the first edition of a new pan-European, online film festival called Artekino.

Arte has been developing the festival for more than a year-and-a-half, working closely with key partner Festival Scope — which has a long history of overseeing online distribution for festivals and cross-border audiences — as well as international sales agents in the region.

“Arte wanted to promote European cinema in a new way beyond what we already do through our channels and co-productions, putting the emphasis on independent, auteur cinema to spotlight new trends, new talents and even emerging territories,” Olivier Père, managing director of Arte France Cinéma, explained to Screen. “It’s the first festival of its kind focused only on European cinema.”

UK filmmaker Chanya Button’s debut feature as director and producer, Burn Burn Burn, was voted by the audience at the Odessa International Film Festival (Oiff) as the winner of this year’s Grand Prix.

Producer Daniel-Konrad Cooper accepted the Golden Duke statuette on behalf of the production team from Oiff’s festival president Victoria Tigipko during the gala closing ceremony in the Black Sea city’s historic National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet.

Button’s melancholic comedy had premiered at last year’s London Film Festival and is being handled internationally by Urban Distribution International.

The films selected for the 10th anniversary edition of the European Parliament’s Lux Film Prize have been revealed at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff).

At a packed event hosted at Karlovy Vary’s Hotel Pupp on Sunday (July 3), the 10 films were unveiled by Michaela Šojdrová, vice-chair of the committee on culture and education, Martina Dlabajová, vice-chair of the committee on budgetary control, Julie Ward and Bogdan Wenta, members of the committee on culture and education and Doris Pack, Lux Film Prize Coordinator.

Mirjana Karanovic’s A Good Wife wins best first film; audience award goes to Iciar Bollain’s The Olive Tree.

The 14th edition of the Brussels Film Festival closed with the Golden Iris award going to Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann, with a prize of €10,000 to distributor September Film. The film also won best screenplay and the Rtbf Vt Prize of best film.

The jury was comprised of Flemish actress Natali Broods, Italian director Emanuele Crialese, Belgian actor Pierre Dherte, Dutch actor Derek De Lint and Croatian director Ivona Juka.

The White Iris award for best first film in competition went to A Good Wife by Mirjana Karanovic.

The festival’s top prizes were awarded to Ben Sharrock’s Pikadero (UK-Spain), which took the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film, Argyris Papadimitropoulos’s Suntan (Greece) which won Best International Feature Film, and Johan Grimonprez’s Shadow World (Us), which won Best Documentary Feature Film.

The line-up for the 70th Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) has been unveiled this morning by artistic director Mark Adams.

This year’s Eiff (June 15-26) will comprise a total 161 features from 46 countries including: 22 world premieres, five international premieres, 17 European premieres and 85 UK premieres.

The Greek Film Centre (Eek) has appointed a female filmmaker for the first time in its history.

The versatile filmmaker Electra Venaki has been appointed director general of the Greek Film Centre (Ekk), marking the first time that a woman has helmed the organisation.

The appointment follows sweeping changes within the organisation last January and the installation of a new board by the Culture minister.

During her 20-year experience in the film industry Venaki specialized in editing and sound design and is known for her close association with the acclaimed late Greek director Alida Dimitriou.

Venaki was in charge of audiovisual production in the Lambrakis Press Group and chief editor of Greek media site in.gr from 1999 to 2005.

Among her immediate tasks will be lobbying for the re-establishment of the special levy on cinema admissions, which was unexpectedly scrapped last August by the government.

The levy was generating between four and eight million Euros for the industry...

Visit Films has acquired worldwide sales rights to Greek filmmaker Argyris Papadimitropoulos’ "Suntan," which will have its world premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival and compete the prestigious Vpro Big Screen Awards. The movie will mark the director's return to Rotterdam after his 2011 drama, "Wasted Youth," opened the 40th edition. "Suntan" is produced by Oxymoron Films and Phaedra Vokali of Greek independent production company Marni Films. The deal excludes sales rights in Greece and Cyprus. New York-based sales firm Visit Films has acquired worldwide rights excluding Greece and Cyprus for Suntan.

The dark “coming-of-middle-age” drama is set to receive its world premiere at International Rotterdam Film Festival (Iffr) tomorrow (Feb 2), where it is competing for the Vpro Big Screen Awards.

The film stars Makis Papadimitriou (L, Chevalier) as Kostis, a lonely, middle-aged doctor of a tiny holiday island. When he meets and falls for Anna, a 19-year-old tourist, he begins spending nearly all of his time partying with her and her group of wild friends. But what starts as a rediscovery of his long-lost youth, however, slowly turns into an obsession as Kostis becomes willing to do whatever it takes to keep Anna.

Written and directed by Argyris Papadimitropoulos (Wasted Youth), the film also stars Elli Tringou, Milou Van Groessen, Dimi Hart, Hara Kotsali, and Marcus Collen.

Mexican feature Perpetual Sadness and Israeli drama Next to Her take top prizes at Greek festival.Scroll down for full list of winners

Mexican director Jorge Perez Solorzano’s Perpetual Sadness (La Tirisia) was named best film at the 55th Thessaloniki International Film Festival (Oct 31 - Nov 9) winning the Golden Alexander.

It beat competition from 13 other first and second films screened in this year’s international competition section.

The film deals with the stoicism and the sadness shared by women in a remote village facing the departure of their sons in search of work. World sales are handled by Media Luna.

It marks the second consecutive year that a Mexican production has won top honours at Thessaloniki. Last year, Diego Quemada-Diez’s Golden Dream (La jaula de oro) scooped the top award as well as best director.

Some 10 Mexican features have played in competition at the festival since 2000, winning cropping 12 principal awards.
