Green Day Perform ‘Haushinka’ for the First Time Since 1997
Image
Green Day fans in Santiago, Chile got to witness a historic performance on Saturday night. The Billie Joe Armstrong-fronted group revived a catalog classic, “Haushinka,” for the first time in 28 years during a performance at Parque Estadio Nacional.

The group snuck in the Nimrod deep cut into the set list, playing it for the first time since a show in Boise, Idaho in 1997.

“I think that’s the first time we do it since 1993, maybe,” Armstrong said onstage. (He was off by four years, since Nimrod didn’t come...

‘Weapons’ Review: Josh Brolin & Julia Garner Lead Brilliant Ensemble In Zach Cregger’s Awesome And Creepy New Horror Mystery
Image
So the poster for the new horror film Weapons shows a bunch of kids running down a suburban street with the ad line saying: “Last night at 2:17 am every child from Mrs. Gandy’s class woke up, got out of bed, went downstairs, opened the front door, walked into the dark … and they never came back.”

Immediately I start thinking, “Yeah, a Children of the Corn or Children of the Damned kind of riff.” But look closer at the credits and the writer-director is none other than Zach Cregger, whose debut feature film Barbarian was one of the most impressive first films, as well as horror genre entries, I had seen in years. There was just something so unique and compelling about its “house of horrors” concept that grabbed me instantly, and I have been talking about it ever since its 2022 debut, and anxiously awaiting whatever Cregger had in store for us next.

Image
BBC Studios have formed a new division for U.K. entertainment to be headed by Suzy Lamb, Variety has learned.

The new unit comes after Studios, the BBC’s commercial arm which produces content sold around the world, merged its entertainment/music and factual entertainment/events divisions, which produced content including the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, King Charles III’s coronation party and shows such as “Strictly Come Dancing” and “The Weakest Link.”

Lamb, who was previously managing director of the entertainment and music unit, will oversee creative, commercial and operational strategy. Emmys 2024: Variety Critics Celebrate ‘Reservation Dogs,’ Disagree About ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ and Cackle Over ‘The Morning Show’
Image
Every year, the Television Academy’s Emmy nominations honor hundreds of individuals , dozens of shows and inspire enough material for a week’s worth of trend pieces. Sorting through it all is daunting, which is why Variety TV critics Alison Herman and Aramide Tinubu convened to give their big-picture thoughts on the nominations , from breakout shows to the larger forces shaping the field.

Alison Herman: Aramide, this was always going to be a weird year for the Emmys — after all, the last Emmys happened just six months ago! That January ceremony had been delayed by Hollywood’s historic dual strikes, which also pushed several awards-staple series outside this year’s eligibility window. Throw in the power vacuum left behind by “Succession” wrapping its run and you have a relatively blank slate. Given the Academy’s propensity to rally around just a handful of favorites each year, á la “Ted Lasso,...

“Birthdays or chicken?” Jim Howick asks Simon Farnaby on stage at the BFI Southbank. The first two episodes of Ghosts’ new series have just screened to a packed auditorium, where they were met by a reception that was – what’s a bigger word than rapturous? Euphoric? ‘Liaison’ Review: Eva Green and Vincent Cassel in an Apple TV+ Romantic Thriller That Never Finds Its Pulse
Image
It’s easy to forgive a lot in a romance if the chemistry is strong enough, and for the first couple episodes of Apple TV+’s Liaison, the sparks between Eva Green’s Alison and Vincent Cassel’s Gabriel seem reason enough to forge ahead. It hardly matters if we don’t really understand the international conspiracy that’s reunited these estranged exes, or that we don’t yet understand what transpired between them all those years ago. The smolder between them draws us in, even when all they’re doing is exchanging a wordless gaze through a rain-splattered window.

But without enough fuel to ignite a blaze, smolder is about as far as it gets. By the time Liaison stumbles to a close, whatever flickers of promise it showed early on have long since been stamped out by indifferent storytelling and a bloated run time.

The narrative is simultaneously...

The film centers around Mei Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang), “a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence,” per the official synopsis. “Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter — an unfortunate reality for the teenager. Happy birthday to Linda Ronstadt’s New Wave album Mad Love, released 40 years ago, in March 1980. It’s the weirdest oddity in her catalog, with three Elvis Costello covers.
