    Hokey Horror

Some high school kids have to spend the night in a cell, in an old prison to raise money for the school. During their stay, they get a visit from a menacing creature that wants them dead. Three students and a teacher must find a way to survive.

This is kind of a hokey horror comedy that is geared towards the preteens for sure. It did have a Goosebumps feel. The acting was good but it had a cheesy premise and a lot of lame lines. It had a decent budget with a crisp picture.

Little kids might still be scared and the big kids might want to just avoid this one altogether.

    Misguided

It could have been a slightly comedic horror mystery for teenagers, and it turned out to be annoying nonsense. I have to attribute this to low IQs of the screenwriter and the director. What really annoys me is that technically the film is well made, and the budget was more than sufficient to turn this into a Scooby-Doo type of fun horror, or something similar to Wes Craven movies. But no such luck. The teenagers are just annoying, they talk nonsense, the humour is abysmal, there is no payoff to any scene, and the whole thing is just tonally confusing and utterly illogical. This shouldn't even be considered a finished script, as the ending is abrupt and offers no closure, and the long opening that precedes the opening credits has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the film. I kept asking myself: what am I even watching? The truth is, the filmmakers didn't know what they were doing, so the audience really stood no chance in making sense out of it. Any moderately talented screenwriter could take this script and make it a lot more coherent and enjoyable for watching if you gave them just a few hours to rewrite it. A total waste of what could have been a fun teenage movie.

One of the best independent horror comedies of all time

This may be sold as an homage to the 80's, but believe me, that's not what it is. It's just a really good horror spoof.

Honestly, if you're expecting a movie that LOOKS like an 80's movie, go somewhere else. But it sure as heck sounds like one. Great clever comedy with witty performances from everyone. Twists galore and funny stereotypes. Actual teenagers playing teenagers. Useless high school drama, but hilariously played.

The big credits go to every actor in this movie who are giving funny and realistic performances that you'd expect from that type of spoof. Turning every trope against itself. Props for also using great practical effects on the monster. An actual MONSTER, not a over-explained cliché.

Lastly, the soundtrack is absolutely amazing. For an independent production, instrumentals are fun, quirky and nostalgic of a time where scary could rhyme with funny, even in terms of music.

If you can keep your standards low towards the visuals (even though there are some nice shots), you'll definitely be having a bloody good time. Like a Goosebumps episode gone good or an 80's family horror movie.

    Who is this even for?

This movie has a serious identity crisis. For one thing, it's rated R, which seems bizarre, because in all honesty, 99% of this movie feels like a disney channel movie. It overwhelmingly has that vibe, from the whimsical music, the camera angles, the script, the godawful dialogue aimed at preteens, the entire thing felt overly wholesome and family friendly. Then out of nowhere they throw in a single gory scene at the end, which felt totally off with the rest of the cartoonish tone of the film and...a single curse word that i noticed, and garnered an R rating

My question is...why? Again, who is this for? Your average adult horror fan is going to find this movie as extremely dull, childlike, and cringeworthy, as I did, and the audience this seems to be aimed at (the disney channel, nickelodeon demographic) would not be old enough to view this

Weird choice man. I don't get it

    • Trivia
The film's unique closing credit sequence was conceived because the production was shot over several years by a dedicated but small team of filmmakers, with many people filling multiple roles. Thus a traditional "credit roll" would have been very short. The resulting gimmick also allowed the makers to revisit some open ended plots and underused characters.

Mortimer: Tonight is the anniversary of they Jail House Massacre!

Deputy Marcus: Real quick... do we feel "massacre" is a bit of a strong word? It was just that one small family.

Arial: The youngest boy did survive.

Deputy Marcus: See. Three deaths. I don't know the text book definition of a massacre, but it's gotta be close to... seven.

Sheriff Evans: Don't go throwing facts around, Deputy. We're talking FOLK LORE here.
