2025 is quietly shaping up to be the Year of the Skarsgård. Coming off the science fiction blockbuster hit "Dune: Part Two" from last year, patriarch Stellan Skarsgård has once again helped elevate genre content with a stunning dramatic turn in the "Star Wars" prequel series "Andor" on Disney+. Meanwhile, Bill Skarsgård has returned to the world of Stephen King and Pennywise the Clown, reprising the role that made him a household name in the HBO series "It: Welcome to Derry." But perhaps most significant of all is the latest endeavor of Alexander Skarsgård, an arguably underrated member of the acting dynasty currently leading "Murderbot," one of the buzziest shows of Apple TV+ triumphant 2025 run.
It's possible Alexander doesn't get as much attention because his most high-profile swing at a blockbuster turned out to be a major box office bomb. There...

Apple TV+‘s Your Friends and Neighbors arrives with all the prestige drama credentials: a sharp cast led by Jon Hamm, cool-toned cinematography slathered in gray, and a premise teeming with scandalous potential.
It’s a dark comedy-crime series about wealthy suburbanites misbehaving in a gated community — infidelity, robbery, insurance fraud, and maybe even murder.
Everything about it screams sharp, biting satire. And yet… it never cuts.
(Apple TV+)
For all its polish, Your Friends and Neighbors never really says anything. It gestures toward critique but retreats to the safety of soapy drama and aesthetic indulgence.
When Satire Pulls Its Punches
Effective satire doesn’t just depict bad behavior — it criticizes it. Succession skewers the grotesque power plays of the ultra-rich. The White Lotus lays bare the rot beneath luxury tourism.
Even Big Little Lies tempers its soapy veneer with real thematic weight around trauma and complicity.
But Your Friends and Neighbors?...

David E. Kelley is no stranger to a massive success story. The writer and producer has numerous beloved titles under his belt, from The Practice to Ally McBeal to Big Little Lies. For the most part, everything the creative touches turns into television gold, so when he struck out with Apple TV+ to bring Scott Turow’s legal thriller novel Presumed Innocent to the small-screen, his attachment destined it for greatness. The show became a top-watched favorite for the streamers, so, with audiences wanting more, despite being billed as a miniseries, it was eventually announced that there would be a Season 2. But what about after that?
The sophomore installment will leave the characters from Turow’s novel behind and flip through the pages of another book — Jo Murray’s upcoming Dissection of a Murder. Crime thriller fans needn’t worry as the new source material is in the same vein...

On a humid Friday afternoon in Austin, Texas, an audience is treated to the first episode of Presumed Innocent before creator David E. Kelley is bestowed with Atx TV Festival’s inaugural Showrunner Award. Backstage, Kelley is also watching the episode for the first time in quite a while.
“I usually don’t go back and watch things after they’re all done…but we’re really proud of this one, so it’s not painful,” he jokes.
Revisiting his work isn’t something he’s “philosophically opposed to” or even necessarily actively avoiding, per se, he adds.
“It’s not something I do. I feel like one day I will,” he tells Deadline, sitting down for an interview ahead of his award ceremony. “I’ve not seen an episode of Ally McBeal or Picket Fences in 20 years…So, I’ll probably forget the plots and then I can enjoy them like a new viewer.

Here’s a big little update on Big Little Lies: Creator David E. Kelley is “hopeful” that we’ll get a Season 3 of the HBO drama. Kelley told People at the recent Gotham TV Awards in New York City that everyone “is very committed” to the idea of a third season of Big Little Lies. “We’re hoping it happens,” he said. “We had a great time doing the first two seasons, and we all want to do it again. I’m hopeful it’ll happen.” None of the stars of Big Little Lies — a cast that includes Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley — is under contract yet, Kelley explained. He said the trick is to “corral a lot of high-caliber talent and their publicists.” And that high-caliber talent also includes Liane Moriarty, author of the 2014 novel Big Little Lies, who has written a...

Creator David E. Kelley told the Gotham TV Awards crowd on June 2 that he is “hopeful” Big Little Lies will return and stressed that the Monterey Five “all want to do it again.” The drama has been off the air since 2019, yet enthusiasm from Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz remains high.
Kelley cautioned that “nobody’s under contract,” noting the challenge of aligning top-tier schedules, publicists and pay-scale expectations. He added that season three would adapt a new novel now being written by Liane Moriarty, although development is still “very premature.”
HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi echoed that view in March, revealing the network has received roughly 150 pages of Moriarty’s manuscript but will “sit tight” until the book is complete. Programming president Casey Bloys has said the channel is open to more episodes once the cast can align, describing the current status as...

David E. Kelley is holding onto hope that Big Little Lies will return for a third season.
Season two of the HBO series arrived in 2019, two years after season one debuted. It’s been half a decade since the show debuted new episodes, though the series creator told People that he’s “hopeful” season three will “happen.”

David E. Kelley is just as eager for the continuation of Big Little Lies as the cast and fans of the HBO serialized adaptation of the Liane Moriarty novel.
In a recent interview with People, the veteran TV writer-producer said he is “hopeful” about Season 3, which would come more than six years after the conclusion of the sophomore installment.
“We’re hoping it happens,” the show creator, who recently accepted the Visionary Award at the Gotham TV Awards, said. “We had a great time doing the first two seasons and we all want to do it again. I’m hopeful it’ll happen.”
Though the main cast — Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz — have largely expressed interest in returning, the quintet of Monterey moms are not yet “under contract.” In recent months, Kravitz has expressed that she is “waiting by the phone” for any news of forward movement.

Do you know an actress who consistently stays booked and busy? Nicole Kidman. The Oscar winner is showing no signs of slowing down as she takes on her latest role in Girls and Their Horses, a new series adaptation headed to Prime Video.
According to Variety, the show is currently in development. Legendary Television and Amazon MGM Studios are signed on to produce for Prime Video, with Kidman not only set to star but also serving as executive producer through her Blossom Films banner. Some book fans might already be familiar with the source material. The series is based on Eliza Jane Brazier's 2023 thriller novel of the same name.
Unlike some other series adaptations that don't have any involvement of the author, Brazier is playing a hands-on role. She’s writing the pilot and will also serve as an executive producer, helping to ensure the story stays true to her original vision.

Upcoming Sarah Snook-starring thriller series All Her Fault and Lena Dunham rom-com show Too Much, as well as a planned TV take on Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds got big shout-outs during SXSW London on Thursday.
They were in the spotlight as global hit series from various production labels under the Universal International Studios umbrella took center stage at the first-ever SXSW London.
“Global Stories: What makes compelling TV?” was the question discussed by Surian Fletcher-Jones, head of drama at Working Title Television; Sue Gibbs, head of development at Heyday Television, the joint venture of producer David Heyman and Universal International Studios; and Noemi Spanos, creative director at Carnival Films. Beatrice Springborn, president, Universal International Studios and Universal Content Productions (UCP), functioned as the moderator.
Confronted with a question about how TV industry cost reductions, other spending cutbacks and layoffs are affecting their work, the execs shared insight into the challenges but also opportunities.

In accepting the Visionary Tribute at the 2025 Gotham TV Awards, acclaimed and prolific TV series writer-producer David E. Kelley rallied his fellow creators, urging them to stay true to who they are even if that goes against corporate mandates.
“Every day when I wake up and get to do this job, I know how lucky I am, and all of us are lucky to do what we do,” he said, noting how it feels to be part of the creative community at gatherings like The Gothams.
Which is “perhaps why I’m a little disappointed with some of the compromises and capitulations being taken by some of our corporate industry partners,” he said to a big applause.
Kelley, whose long list of credits includes L.A. Law, The Practice, Ally McBeal, Big Little Lies and Presumed Innocent, then addressed his fellow creatives, alluding to the America going though “darker times of moral wobble.

And that’s far from the complete list. So it’s fitting that David E. Kelley was chosen as the inaugural recipient of the Atx TV Festival’s Showrunner Award. Over the course of his career, he’s earned 31 Emmy nominations and 12 wins (including a Hall of Fame trophy) and was the first producer ever to take home Emmys for both comedy series and drama series in the same year. Not to mention all of the actors he's written for who have won trophies in their own right.
In a Q&a at the festival moderated by Gold Derby’s editor-in-chief, Kelley talked about his creative process, what he learned from his mentor Steven Bochco, and why he still writes longhand.

The first three episodes of Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2 have now aired, and the poor initial critical response to the series is reflected by a disgruntled viewership. The series, based on The New York Times best-selling book by Liane Moriarty, wrapped up the author's work in its opening season, seeing the announcement of a second season met with confusion. Still, the return of Nicole Kidman's mysterious Masha Dmitrichenko and a brand-new batch of strangers could perhaps rectify the opening outing's poor reception, with Season 1 holding a 59% rating from both critics and audiences.
Alas, the second season has achieved the opposite, with its terrible critics' score now accompanied by a poor 54% from audiences, marking a 5% decrease from Season 1. In a small break of sun in the stormy cloud that hangs over Nine Perfect Strangers' heads, after three episodes, the critics' score that first landed at 38% is now up to 41%, although...

Cornerstone Films has secured a raft of international distribution deals for Harry Lighton’s “Pillion,” following the film’s acclaimed run at the Cannes Film Festival.
In the film, Colin, a timid man is swept off his feet when Ray, an enigmatic, impossibly handsome biker takes him on as his submissive. The film stars Harry Melling as Colin and and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Alexander Skarsgard as Ray.
The LGBTQ+ drama, which premiered in the Cannes Un Certain Regard section, earned Lighton the Un Certain Regard Award for best screenplay and received glowing reviews from critics. Reviewing the film for Variety, Peter Debruge wrote: “Laced with a wry sense of humor, ‘Pillion’ manages to be both understated and explicit in the way Lighton presents practically everything that happens in Colin and Ray’s unconventional relationship.”

“I get to kiss Batman!” said Nicole Kidman with the kind of cheeky honesty only a true artist can afford. And that, my friends, was all the explanation she felt she owed for her role in 1995’s Batman Forever.
The 2024 comment wasn’t just charming; it was revealing. It stripped the commercial fog from blockbusters and reminded us: sometimes, actors choose stories because they want to be part of the fun. So, when I heard the recent whispers—no, murmurs—about Kidman potentially stepping into Spider-Man: Brand New Day as a villain, I didn’t scoff.
I leaned in. I remembered that quote. This isn’t just another caped cameo; this might be a full-circle moment. The rumor about Spider-Man 4, mixed with Kidman’s superhero comment, her powerhouse presence, and her return to blockbusters via Aquaman, all start to look less like fan-fueled fantasy and more like fate flirting with form.

Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks couldn’t be better matched as sisters who’ve landed on the opposite ends of easy street. It’s entertaining to watch the women act opposite each other, biting into their succulent roles as siblings in a long-simmering feud. In Prime Video’s “The Better Sister,” airing on May 29th, this pair harbors so many shared secrets they would need a storage unit to contain them.
Over eight twisty, turbulent episodes, past one shocking reveal and over another cliffhanger, the audience is invited to guess if one sister is superior to the other. The most successful is Chloe (Biel). The chilly Anna Wintour-ish married magazine editor glides through a glamorous life with a Manhattan penthouse and prime Easthampton real estate. In contrast, Nicky (Banks), the funky eldest and underdog, struggles back in their native Cleveland. The hot mess alcoholic stumbles one day at a...

HBO's acclaimed, star-studded series "Big Little Lies" centers on a conniving group of families embroiled in the death of a local resident. The resulting murder mystery only exacerbates and exposes the grudges and tensions between them as their biggest secrets come to light. It’s been over two months since Paradise Season 1 concluded with an epic finale, but it didn’t take Hulu long to move forward with another season. Hailing from creator Dan Fogelman, who also previously worked with star Sterling K. Brown on This Is Us, Paradise tells a post-apocalyptic murder mystery story. As Agent Xavier Collins works to find out who killed President Bradford (James Marsden), the audience tries to navigate the mystery of why 25,000 people are living inside a mountain – certainly a unique concept.
Deadline recently unveiled the script for the first episode of Paradise, and it includes a foreword from writer and creator Dan Fogelman. It was here that Fogelman revealed he originally had the idea for Paradise more than 10 years ago. During one of his earliest writing gigs, he found himself in the room with a billionaire of immense power, and on his drive home from work that day,...

We love to watch rich people flounder, don’t we? TV’s favorite genre these days seems to be “soapy luxury satire with flawed women,” and half of them seem to star Nicole Kidman, from The White Lotus to The Perfect Couple to Nine Perfect Strangers. Now Netflix brings us Sirens (now streaming; I’ve seen all five episodes), with Julianne Moore leading an all-star cast wallowing in money and sex and bad behavior. All that glitters is not gold, though: The comedy aspects don’t really work, and the glamour gives way to a stark examination of psychological trauma,...

While Hulu series “Nine Perfect Strangers” used Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name as the backbone of the Nicole Kidman-led series, Season 2 prompted the team — led by creator David E. Kelley — to go off-book as they crafted the second act of Nicole Kidman’s Masha Dmitrichenko.
Moriarty, who did not write a follow-up book to “Nine Perfect Strangers,” gave the team her blessing for a second installment of the series, which was renewed by Hulu for a Season 2 in June 2023, well after Season 1 first premiered in 2021. And since “Nine Perfect Strangers” first premiered nearly four years ago, EP Bruna Papandrea noted psilocybin (a.k.a. magic mushrooms) have been embraced tenfold, opening the door for countless stories unlocking past traumas.
“There’s no underlying material at all, no ongoing story,” Papandrea told TheWrap, noting that Season 2 picks up with Masha’s past controversies having been written about and publicized heavily.

Part of what makes “Agatha All Along” an interesting character study is picking up with Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) when she’s lost her power and seeing just what she’ll do to get it back, especially when she needs others. Specifically, she needs a group of other witches — and one familiar teen (Joe Locke) — to walk with her down the Witches’ Road, a magical, constructed path, of a sort, that offers deadly trials to those who summon it but also power and the fulfillment of desire to those that survive to its end.
Assembling a creative coven for the Disney+ miniseries wasn’t nearly so difficult for showrunner, writer, and director Jac Schaeffer as it is for her main character. “ We’re doing TV, we’re doing music, we’re doing film. We’re doing different eras. We’re doing different tones. And my true north became witches,” Schaeffer told IndieWire.

Nine Perfect Strangers marked Nicole Kidman's second Liane Moriarty adaptation after Big Little Lies, which premiered in 2021 as a limited series. Following its initial success, Hulu renewed the show for a second season, turning it into an anthology.
Kidman is officially back as resort director Masha Dmitrichencko with a series of brand-new guests. The Penguin is entering the Emmy Awards as a limited series leaving fans wondering if a second season will ever happen. Would HBO submit a show for consideration in the limited series category if it's getting a season 2? Well, reassuringly, it has before.
A limited series entry doesn’t always mean a one-season wonder. Remember The White Lotus started as a limited series before its popularity led to further seasons, and Shogun was commissioned for a sophomore season after its success. Big Little Lies, also, won the Outstanding Limited Series Emmy Award and then had a second season (although perhaps it shouldn't have).
Colin Farrell will vie for Best Actor for playing Oswald “Oz’ Cobb while Cristin Milioti will enter the Best Actress category for her role as Sofia Falcone. Rhenzy Feliz, who played Oz’s right-hand man Victor, will enter the Supporting Actor category, while Deirdre O’Connell, who played Oz’s mom Francis,...

Nicole Kidman can easily be one of the most sought-after actresses in the industry with a slew of well-acclaimed projects to her name. Exclusive: Actress Merrin Dungey has signed with Quest Entertainment & Management.
The signing marks a reunion of sorts for the Gersh-repped Dungey and manager Paul Rosicker of Quest. Dungey has been with Gersh for over two decades, while Rosicker was a TV talent agent at Gersh for 30+ years before launching Quest with partner Brian Ferrantino last year.
Recently, Dungey has been seen in a series regular role opposite Courteney Cox and Greg Kinnear on Starz’s Shining Vale. She’s also recurred on CBS’s S.W.At., Bob’s Burgers for Fox, The Lincoln Lawyer at Netflix, and HBO’s Emmy winner Big Little Lies.
Dungey originally broke out as Francie, the roommate of Jennifer Garner’s Sydney, on J. J. Abrams’ Alias. She continues to be represented by Gersh and Jackoway, Austen Tyerman.
We were first to report on the launch of Quest Entertainment & Management in February of last year.

As the fate of The Penguin Season 2 hangs in the balance, it seems HBO just made a big decision that could indicate the future of the DC drama. The Batman spin-off was a resounding success for the network, pulling in nominations left and right the past few months (including a Golden Globe win under its belt). Despite HBO reportedly working on The Penguin Season 2, they will continue to campaign in the Limited Series category.
Per Deadline, HBO is planning on submitting The Penguin in the Outstanding Limited Series category at the Emmy Awards. As expected, Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti will be in the running for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, in the Limited Series categories. Supporting actors Rhenzy Feliz and Deirdre O’ Connell will also enter the Emmy race for their respective roles as Victor and Francis. Meanwhile, series creator Lauren LeFranc will be submitted for scripting the award-winning DC series.

We could all use a little healing, and sometimes you have to use unconventional means to achieve serenity. That’s the philosophy of Masha Dmitrichenko (Nicole Kidman), a glamorous wellness guru who invites the wealthy and emotionally brittle to indulge in yoga, detoxes and micro-dosing, whether they like it or not. After the, uh, success of her previous retreat, she has moved shop to the Alps and invited a new group of seemingly unconnected strangers to the snow-covered mountains to receive her help.

Hulu had a major hit with “Nine Perfect Strangers,” becoming its most-watched original programming of all time upon its premiere. Of course, that meant a follow-up would be greenlit, even though it was initially intended as a miniseries. Fortunately, this is a concept that lends itself well to an anthology format: take a bunch of dramatic rich people,...

As a self-proclaimed president of the David E. Kelley fan club, I found the first season of Nine Perfect Strangers to be a stunning disappointment, especially considering the talent involved, both in front of and behind the camera. How many shows can boast a cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Michael Shannon, Melissa McCarthy, Regina Hall, and Luke Evans?
The result was a story that wandered aimlessly from character to character, plot point to plot point, and episode to episode, with no real purpose other than to showcase bizarre, head-scratching connections that felt more contrived than authentic. However, at the very least, the freshman outing was highly watchable—perfect for bingeing on Hulu.
I’m pleased to announce Nine Perfect Strangers’ second season is a much stronger effort. Kelley embraces his roots by emphasizing the bond between character development and eccentric storylines, which serves the season well. The individual mysteries concerning...

Exclusive: BAFTA and Academy-Award-winning indie production company Cowboy Films has secured the rights in a competitive situation to adapt Cat Fight, the novel by Kit Conway, for TV. The deal was brokered by UTA on behalf of the author.
Bantam will publish the novel in the U.K. on May 15, with the U.S. to follow on June 3 from Atria Books.
Described as Big Little Lies meets Tiger King, Cat Fight is a fun and propulsive novel about three suburban women who, throughout one summer, each use the growing hysteria around a big cat sighting to achieve their own agendas—some more sinister than others. It marks a suspense fiction debut for Conway, who previously worked as a corporate lawyer in London.

The screenplay for Devil’s Mouth is by Aja Gabel and Mj Wesner and was featured on the 2019 Black List, the annual collection of the best unproduced scripts in Hollywood. Back then it was titled Apex and was listed with the following plot: “When old college friends on a trip to Mexico get trapped in an underwater cave system with a bull shark, old tensions and power struggles resurface as they fight to survive.” Later revisions have been made by Wadlow, and Deadline indicates that the setting has been moved from Mexico to Thailand.
