A stray thought for Hollywood: Just because Donald Trump is campaigning for free speech—last week, he announced a class-action anti-censorship lawsuit against Twitter, Facebook and Google—doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea.
Free speech, that is. I don’t know about the lawsuit, which will have to reconcile the tech giants’ First Amendment rights and legal protections with a claim that they have abused their immunity by acting as politically one-sided censors.
More heat than light will be shed as the suit works its way through the courts and media mill. But never mind Trump. Freedom of expression is something the movie business should start worrying about, sooner rather than later.
It’s no secret that the movies—like the rest of pop culture—have been operating in an ever-narrower field when it comes to what can be portrayed on-screen, and by whom. Even to identify the...

If you're putting the name of one character of an ensemble drama in the series' title, she had better be intriguing.
Sarah Cooper was all that on The Republic of Sarah Season 1 Episode 1.
The events of the episode forced Sarah to grow up a lot faster than she had been planning to.
Initially, twentysomething history teacher Sarah appeared to be like one of her students, having to be awoken by her roommate Aj to make it to school on time after staying out too late at a punk show.
Then, in some not-so-subtle foreshadowing, Sarah proclaimed that ordinary people can do extraordinary things during a lecture (using the term loosely) on the Revolutionary War.
Little did she know that the revolution was coming, brought on by an invasion of Lydon Industries, an international mining company there to pillage Greylock, an incredibly diverse small New Hampshire town.

At a moment when the difference in values between Senator John McCain and outgoing President Donald Trump could not be in sharper contrast, Stampede Ventures plans to turn the Arizona Senator’s sprawling life story into a feature film. They optioned rights to three books by McCain biographer Mark Salter: The Luckiest Man: Life With John McCain, Faith of My Fathers and Worth the Fighting For. The film project has the support of the late Senator’s widow Cindy McCain — she will be exec producer — and the McCain family. Led by former Warner Bros production chief Greg Silverman, Stampede Ventures optioned the books and will finance development of the script.

CBS Television Studios, Rideback and Thinking Hat are reteaming on a second year of the Rideback/Thinking Hat Campfire writers room, which in its inaugural year developed and sold two projects to CBS. The program, designed to attract experienced feature film writers and other creative voices to broadcast TV development for the first time, has set Jeff Buhler (Pet Sematary), Gbenga Akinnagbe (The Wire) and writer Katrina O’Gilvie (Swagger) for this year’s roster.
The trio work with showrunner/executive producers Anna Fricke (Walker), Rina Mimoun (Under the Bridge) and Corinne Brinkerhoff (American Gothic), who all have overall deals at CBS TV Studios. They will provide support from development through series.
The program, run by Thinking Hat founder and writer-producer Craig Turk, sold two projects to CBS Television Network in its first year in 2019-2020: Drift from Chris Salmanpour and The Eshmun Protocol from Jason Keller.

Even those who consider themselves experts in the subject will find a provocative treasure trove of images and anecdotes in “Skin: A History of Nudity in the Movies.” Danny Wolf’s documentary is a breezy, open-eyed, and often encyclopedic compendium of all the ways the cinema has celebrated, exploited, and negotiated the power of the naked body. The film opens with a montage of actors and directors recalling the first movie they ever saw that had nudity in it, and that allows the film, in its early moments, to leap through some of Nudity’s Greatest Hits.
As it moves back in time, one of the documentary’s fascinations is the way it’s constantly juxtaposing big Hollywood movies and European art movies and softcore exploitation films and everything in between. That, of course, is just as it should be. Aesthetically, there’s a world of difference between “Vixen” and “The Virgin Spring,...

In the Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda plays the founding father of the title who takes the spotlight, but let’s face it, Phillipa Soo’s Eliza Schuyler should take just as much of that spotlight because as Alexander Hamilton’s wife, she was the only one that could put him in his place. She stole his heart, supported him through his political journey and even after he cheated on her, she taught him a harsh lesson of love on being a real husband, father and man.
Soo played the original Eliza Schuyler when it hit Broadway alongside Miranda as well as Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs, Anthony Ramos, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson, Okieriete Onaodowan and Jasmine Cephas Jones. As we all know, it garnered an uproarious ovation as tickets were selling for thousands of dollars. More than that, it became a cultural movement and a watershed moment for inclusive casting and storytelling.

“A Love Story… Not!”
By Raymond Benson
There’s no question that the 1966 film adaptation of Edward Albee’s 1962 Tony-winning play, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, is one of the most important and influential motion pictures of the 1960s. It not only showcased four superlative acting performances, a jaw-dropping impressive directorial debut (by Mike Nichols), brilliant black and white cinematography and editing, but it also changed the Hollywood movie industry.
By the mid-60s, the archaic Production Code, which had been in force since July 1934, was in its death throes. When Otto Preminger began releasing titles in the 1950s without the Production Code Seal of Approval, he proved to the powers-that-be that the Code was not infallible. Then along came such fare as Psycho, Lolita, and The Pawnbroker in the early 60s, and it was clear that the American public wanted to see more “adult” pictures.

Being in lockdown has prompted different responses from actors Aaron Glenane and Liv Hewson.
Glenane, who came back to Sydney from Los Angeles with his fiance and young child, admits he was “going nuts” so he had the idea of staging a live reading of Lyle Kessler’s play Orphans, which he performed at the Old Fitz Theatre five years ago.
He put the idea to Red Line Productions co-founder Andrew Henry, who reached out to Kessler. In turn Kessler approached Alec Baldwin, who starred in the Broadway production in 2013, the story of two orphaned brothers living in a decrepit North Philadelphia house.
The result was the first live streamed reading of the play, featuring Baldwin, Glenane and Henry, with stage directions and descriptions read by lifetime member of the Actors Studio Judy Jerome, on April 11/12.

From the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, the Code has played a key part in the behavior and morals of characters. The Code is set out as a rulebook for pirates to follow, dictating how they should act and how they should conduct their business. Of course, like any society, some pirates take said code more seriously than others.

The Code itself always lurked in the background, but many viewers are still unaware of a lot of its background and what it actually dictated. Many because so many people ignored it.

ABC has ordered a drama pilot based on the book “Wreckage” by Emily Bleeker.
In the project, Lillian Linden looks like a brave survivor of a plane crash on the surface. But she’s been lying to her family, her friends, and the whole world since rescue helicopters scooped her and her fellow survivor, Dave Hall, off a deserted island in the South Pacific. Missing for almost four years, the castaways are thrust into the spotlight after their rescue, becoming media darlings overnight. But they can’t tell the real story, so they lie.
Jacquie Walters will adapt the book for the pilot and serve as co-executive producer. Marc Webb is attached to direct and executive produce under his Dark Lamb banner. Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly will also executive produce along with Mark Martin of Black Lamb and Keith Samples. Bleeker will serve as consultant. ABC Studios will produce.

First introduced as a national proclamation by Congress in 1981, Women’s History Month has been celebrated every year since then, using the 31 days of March to promote and amplify the voices of women across the country — and around the world.
To celebrate Women’s History Month, we asked nine actresses to tell us about the books, films and television shows that have inspired them, as women, over the years. Many of their selections were written by female writers, or star strong female leads. The shared goal of these actresses is to not only commemorate the achievements of women this month, but to celebrate their voices — and the stories they continue to tell — all year long.

‘The 4400’ & ‘The L.A. Complex’ Reboots And ‘Good Christian Bitches’ Rolled To Next Season At the CW
Exclusive: The CW has officially wrapped its 2019 pilot pickups with six orders, and three high-profile projects, The 4400, The L.A. Complex and Good Christian Bitches, were not among those getting a green light but neither is dead. All three have been rolled to next season, which is something the CW President Mark Pedowitz does with IP he believes in.
In 2017, there also were two big-title projects that did not make the cut to pilot, Charmed and The Lost Boys. Both were rolled and subsequently made it to pilot — Charmed did it last season, when it was picked up to series and was recently renewed for a second season. It took another year, but The Lost Boys too nabbed a pilot order last month.

CBS has set spring premiere dates for new drama series The Code, The Red Line, which will air as an eight-episode event series, and returning Ransom.
The Red Line, from Greg Berlanti and Ava DuVernay and starring Noah Wyle, will air in two-hour installments over four consecutive Sundays beginning April 28 following 60 Minutes. The episodes will air from 8-10 Pm Et/Pt, after God Friended Me wraps its first season.
“The Red Line is a serialized drama with compelling characters and provocative themes that we expect viewers will want to watch more than one hour per week, so we wanted to eventize it and try something unique with two-hour blocks over four weeks,” said Noriko Kelley, Executive Vice President, Program Planning & Scheduling, CBS Entertainment. “Sundays have always been a night of prestige programming for the network, and 60 Minutes provides the perfect lead-in for this special series.”

(L-r) Jai Courtney, Finn Little and Shawn Seet.
Shawn Seet was 12 when he saw Henri Safran’s Storm Boy, the 1976 family drama based on Colin Thiele’s acclaimed novel.
The director was born in Australia but lived in Malaysia until he was 12. His uncle took him to the movie which made such an impression he kept the film’s poster, which still adorns his bedroom.
So when producers, Ambience Entertainment’s Michael Boughen and Matthew Street asked him to direct a contemporary re-imagining of the movie, he did not hesitate.
“It was amazing,” Seet tells If. “I asked them, ‘Do you know my history?’ Safran’s film was wonderful, a classic, and as I left the meeting I wondered if I had what it takes to pull it off.”
Enthusiastic responses to previews staged by Sony Pictures and screenings at the St George OpenAir Cinema suggest he’s nailed it.
