With its list of May 2024 releases, Amazon Prime Video is giving us the kindest gift of all: cougar Anne Hathaway.

May 2 sees the premiere of The Idea of You, a romantic-comedy that features Hathaway as a 40-year-old mom finding romance with a 24-year-old boy band singer (Nicholas Galitzine). Having saved the medium of film forever, Prime Video is celebrating with some big time library titles this month as well. American Fiction and BlacKkKlansman arrive on May 14 and will be followed by Creed and Pearl: An X-traordinary Origin Story on May 16.

For its TV offerings, Prime is leading off with Outer Range season 2 on May 16. This James Brolin sci-fi Western will continue the mysteries of the strange happenings on Thanos’ ranch. Reality TV fans will be able to enjoy the Daniel Tosh-hosted competition series The Goat on May 9.

CBS is adding two famed attorneys to its roster.

Matlock, one of television’s most iconic crime dramas, is getting a new life at CBS. The Paramount Global-backed broadcast network has handed out a pilot order for a new take on the former defense attorney formerly played by Andy Griffith. Kathy Bates will take on the role of Madeline Matlock.

Additionally, The Good Wife/The Good Fight creators Robert and Michelle King are returning to CBS with the third series in the franchise, Elsbeth, with star Carrie Preston set to reprise her role in the drama that has also received a pilot order at the broadcast network. These are the first two drama pilot orders for CBS and are being eyed for the 2023-24 broadcast season.

Additionally, CBS is looking toward the 2024-25 broadcast season with dramas The Pact (which stems from its overall deal with the NAACP) and Sherlock Holmes entry Watson.

Exclusive: Emmy-nominated writer, producer and director Nzingha Stewart is set to direct five episodes, including the pilot episode, of Netflix limited series From Scratch, starring and executive produced by Zoe Saldana. Based on Tembi Locke’s best-selling memoir, the series is from Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine banner and 3 Arts Entertainment. Stewart will also serve as producing director. Production begins this spring.

From Scratch is a sweeping, autobiographical romance that follows an American woman as she falls in love with a Sicilian man while studying abroad in Italy then builds a life with him in the United States. When she unexpectedly loses him to illness, she is challenged to pull herself through grief so she can raise their daughter as they would have raised her together: with hope, joy, and infinite love.

Will Packer Media’s Sheila Ducksworth will lead the recently launched CBS/NAACP production partnership, a venture aimed at elevating a diverse range of voices as well as increasing the visibility of Black artists. In her role as president of the venture, Ducksworth will supervise development and production of scripted, unscripted and documentary content for linear television networks and streaming platforms. She will assume her new role on November 9.

“Sheila is an extraordinary creative executive with an incredible eye for great content,” said George Cheeks, President and CEO of the CBS Entertainment Group. “We are excited to draw upon her leadership and experience to establish a production venture that is committed to telling compelling, inclusive stories, while expanding the range of creative voices that bring these stories to the screen.”

Justin Baldoni’s Wayfarer Studios and Wayfarer Entertainment have unveiled the five winners for the “The Six Feet Apart Experiment” filmmaking competition.

Deadline exclusively announced the competition in May as the world was on lockdown due to the pandemic. Jane the Virgin alum Baldoni took these circumstances and aligned them with his film socially distant teen drama Five Feet Apart to launch the experiment. The competition challenged storytellers to look past social isolation and use the current circumstances to fuel their creativity, keeping social impact the focal point for their submissions.

The five winning filmmakers will be paired with seasoned directors, producers and writers who will mentor them throughout the production process. Company 3 is official post-production partner handling editorial and finishing services, with its Founder and President, Stefan Sonnenfeld, serving as an Executive Producer to all films.

Exclusive: STXalternative, a division of Robert Simonds’ Stx Entertainment, has signed a first-look development and production deal with Tracey Edmonds and her Edmonds Entertainment, to co-produce and co-develop scripted and unscripted content for traditional and alternative platforms. The first project under the pact is previously announced Game Divas Play, airing on Bet in 2019, with a diverse slate of projects to follow.

Based on the popular book of the same name by Angela Burt-Murray, Games Divas Play is a stylized drama about the high stakes world of the NBA that follows a desperate basketball wife (Lauren London) trying to protect her family, a tenacious journalist (Karen Obilom) struggling to rebuild a tarnished career, and a scandalous groupie (Parker McKenna Posey) looking to become a star at all costs.

Edmonds is executive producing Games Divas Play through her Edmonds Entertainment banner, along with Burt-Murray. Emmy nominee and Evp of Edmonds Entertainment, Vanessa Middleton wrote the pilot and is an executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Kim Newton.

Gabrielle Union, star and executive producer of NBC’s drama pilot L.A.’s Finest, has signed a first look deal with Sony Pictures TV, the studio behind the offshoot from the Bad Boys movie franchise.
