Hulu has handed a Season 3 renewal to Tell Me Lies, its popular drama series starring Grace Van Patten and Jackson White and produced by 20th Television. Additionally, Tell Me Lies creator, executive producer and showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer has signed an overall deal with 20th TV, a part of Disney Television Studios.

The pickup comes a little over two months after the release of the Season 2 finale, which, just like the Season 1 closer, ended with a cliffhanger twist that threatens to tear the friend group apart.

The renewal was expected. Tell Me Lies stayed in the Hulu Top 15 for over 50 straight days throughout its Season 2 run. Popular with the younger crowd, the series’ social engagement increased 8X vs Season 1 over the same period, with total followers growing 4.3X.

Although given their rapidly declining quality I’m starting to wonder why I bother reviewing them at all.

“The Walking Dead” has been running for nearly 10 years now, and its spinoff, “Fear the Walking Dead,” has been on for another five, so one might think this zombie-infested world has been pretty thoroughly explored by this point. Yet here we have “The Walking Dead: World Beyond,” a “limited series event” that promises to view the “Walking Dead” universe through the eyes of teenagers that have come of age in the zombie apocalypse.

It’s a solid enough premise on paper, but unfortunately, “Brave,” the “World Beyond” pilot, introduces a troupe of typical stock characters and sets them off to traipse through the abandoned towns and zombie-filled forests that viewers have seen many, many times before in this franchise.

Let’s be clear: “What We Become” would be a bad episode of “The Walking Dead” even if it didn’t turn out to be the final in-series appearance of one of the show’s most enduring and beloved characters. It’s dull and lifeless, with no character development to speak of, and its centerpiece is an extended, drama-free hallucination that serves no obvious purpose. What’s more, it’s got a stock antagonist who serves exclusively as a plot device to get Michonne from point A to point B, with point B being the Rick Grimes Sunday Mystery Movies. Unfortunately, that journey is utterly tedious and lacks any sense of import.

Virgil (Kevin Carroll) is quickly revealed to be a standard “driven mad by the death of his family” character who’s brought Michonne to his facility to do what he can’t and kill off his zombified wife and children.

There’s a moment in “Morning Star” that, while not coming close to undoing the damage Carol’s done this season, at least attempts to get us to further understand where she’s coming from. Carol is trying to reconcile with Lydia, who mentions that she’s sorry Henry died and that Carol hates the world because of it. Carol gazes into the distance and murmurs, “I had a whole life.” She didn’t just lose Henry; she also lost her husband and her home in the Kingdom. She had the closest thing to domestic bliss that people on “The Walking Dead” could hope to achieve, and it all came one after another, leaving her with nothing. Lydia tearfully says, “I remember,” and in that moment we do, too.

It’s a good scene, one where two characters relate to each other in a way that plays off their shared...

Well, that was unexpected.

Siddiq (Avi Nash), still suffering from ever-worsening panic attacks, is able to pull himself together enough to realize that Alexandria’s plague is being caused by tainted water — due to a switched handle in the purification system and not from Gamma’s (Thora Birch) zombie dam, as previously theorized — and since Siddiq’s in charge of the water systems with Eugene (Josh McDermitt) gone, he blames himself. Dante (Juan Javier Cardenas) comes by to give him a pep talk and clicks his tongue in a distinct manner, causing Siddiq to realize that Dante is a Whisperer. In fact, he’s the one who forced Siddiq to watch as Alpha (Samantha Morton) beheaded his friends. Dante figures out Siddiq is onto him, they have a brief scuffle, and Dante strangles Siddiq, presumably to death.

Tiff Midnight Madness breakout has already scored deals in key European territories.

Elle Driver has acquired international sales rights to Us director Keith Thomas’s buzzed-about supernatural horror The Vigil, revolving around the Jewish custom of shemira, or watching over the corpse of a recently deceased person ahead of their burial.

Under the seven-figure deal, the Paris-based company is selling the world aside from the Us, which is being handled by CAA Media Finance.

Elle Driver has already scored deals in the key European territories of Spain (Vertigo), France (Wild Bunch Distribution), Italy (Bim) and Germany (Wild Bunch Germany).

Hulu has confirmed that several of its original series will be debuting new episodes on the streaming service in November, including more of season 1 of the Sean Penn drama “The First” and the start of the English comedy “The Bisexual.” And there will also be new to Hulu seasons of some of your favorites reality shows from other networks, including various editions of “Top Chef” and “Vanderpump Rules.”

Likewise, there will be plenty of movies making their first Hulu appearances including 20 of the 26 films in the James Bond franchise as well as all three of the “Oceans” movies.

In The Remains, writer/director Thomas Della Bella whips up his best Amityville Horror impression without coming within miles of the long-standing genre classic. So many scenes skirt around an obvious possession situation that clueless characters miscalculate, as we’re supposed to believe a grieving family had no idea they were moving into a cursed death house.

Scares are bare-minimum mundane – evoking the essence of Wan without any flare – and performances call for help that’s never provided via style or substance. What little creativity Della Bella works into his story is floundered through executional boredom, while viewers are kept waiting for something more than haunted house clichés to scare up excitement.

Frankly, you’ve seen this all before, done a hell of a lot better, and not much worse.

Todd Lowe stars as a father (John) whose family is looking for a fresh start, which they hope to find in their new Victorian home.

Exclusive: Rick Bieber is currently in production on demonic love story The Other in Los Angeles. Cary Elwes and The Godfather‘s Alex Rocco are among the new cast just joining the pic that stars Dominic Sherwood (Take Down) as a young man tormented by the possibility of descending into the depths of insanity, or worse, becoming the target of an actual demonization. Highland Film Group is handling international sales with Gersh’s Jay Cohen repping domestic.

The week before Halloween will see the commencement of principal photography on Edward Payson’s next project: Our Friend John – The Documentary.

Our Friend Jon, a collaboration between Payson’s prolific production company, An AntiHero Production, and Maria Olsen’s MOnsterworks66, will document the story of how three friends will produce and shoot the short film, Rose Thorn, written by Jonathan Hernandez. What makes this story special is that Jon passed away from complications due to Sickle Cell Anemia while writing the script, and what makes it particularly poignant is that Jon’s three friends, Nick Saporito, Brandon Joyal and Garrett Payson, all lead extremely challenging lives...

What will make this film appeal to horror fans worldwide is that Rose Thorn is a horror film...it was Jon’s wish to become a horror filmmaker, and, by shooting his film and documenting the process, his family and friends will both...

Shock's getting word of a new supernatural thriller that's currently casting called The Remains. That's some early poster art you're looking at below. The film is going to star All Cheerleaders Die's Brooke Butler and True Blood's Todd Lowe.

The film follows Lowe, a recently widowed father, who moves his family into an old Victorian home to start a new life but soon discovers a malevolent spirit awaiting their arrival with the intent of possessing his children. Ashley Crow (Cake) is also signed on to the project.

Bloody Disgusting is reporting that All Cheerleaders Die star Brooke Butler (pictured) has signed on to get all screamy alongside Todd Lowe (“True Blood”) and Ashley Crow (“Heroes”) in the new film The Remains, written and directed by Thomas Della Bella.

Production begins this fall.
