What’s that? You’ve never heard of Poochinski, the show starring a murdered cop who is resurrected as a crime-solving bulldog voiced by the great Peter Boyle? Well, perhaps that’s because they only made one episode before some executive thought this brilliant TV series just might not find an audience.
Honestly, when stacked against some of the other bizarre pilots that were never picked up, Poochinski starts to look like a pretty good idea. Who wouldn’t love a police procedural starring a detective dog that’s been resurrected from the dead, anyway? Here’s a look at some of the other pilots that, for better or worse, were just too weird to make into a full series…

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog went off the leash to call out Dave Chappelle ahead of his hosting performance on Saturday Night Live this weekend when the stand-up will surely turn in another memorable, topical and terrific opening monologue — for Triumph to poop on.
The last time Chappelle hosted Saturday Night Live was on November 12, 2022 when the controversial stand-up giant used his opening monologue to defend Kanye West from accusations of anti-Semitism after West had recently tweeted that he was “going death con 3 on Jewish people.” Shortly thereafter, West donned a gimp suit and went on Alex Jones’ show to make such definitely-not-anti-Semitic comments as “I like Hitler,” “I love Nazis” and “I see good things about Hitler." Now, roughly two years later, Chappelle is ready to return to Studio 8H this Saturday when he will probably give a tearful eulogy for Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Looking outside America this Oscar season, there are plenty of candidates for the Best International Feature award. You might gravitate to Latvia’s Cannes entry Flow, a dialogue-free animation in which a black cat, a bird and a ragtag band of other creatures fight for survival in a human-free world after a catastrophic flood. Or maybe you’ll fancy the chances of raucous Irish-language Sundance comedy Kneecap, a wildly stylized biopic of the English-baiting, all-male hip-hop trio from Belfast.
But these two are outliers; the international Oscar race this year is dominated by stories of women, from all over the world. For example, the U.K.’s Hindi-language drama Santosh, filmed in Uttar Pradesh, Northern India, finds a policeman’s widow thrown into her late husband’s world, where she must battle police indifference and solve the murder of a low-caste local girl. From Bulgaria there is Triumph, a political...

Prince Harry is ready to rock the waters again with the arrival of ‘Spare’s’ paperback version. In January 2023, ‘Spare’ was released in hardcover, digital and audiobook formats, but the paperback version was held back. Well, not anymore.
According to reports, Harry hasn’t added or removed any information in the bestselling memoir, so everything will arrive as is.
How Will ‘Spare’ Affect Prince Harry’s Image Moving Forward
When ‘Spare’ dropped in January 2023, it came with a lot of controversies. For example, there was the revelation that it was actually Prince William and Princess Kate’s idea that Harry wore the Nazi uniform for that party.
If you can remember, it caused quite an uproar at the time that Harry was forced to apologize for his choices.
As if that wasn’t enough, he also recalled a time when William called Meghan “rude,” “difficult” and “abrasive” due to staffs...

Leni Riefenstahl, who died in 2003, aged 101, remains forever Google-able as “Hitler’s favorite director” for her daringly innovative documentaries The Triumph of the Will, about the Nazi rally in Nuremberg in 1934, and Olympia, about the Berlin Olympics of 1936. Acclaimed and infamous in equal measures —was she a pioneering genius, a Nazi propagandist, or maybe both? — Riefenstahl remains a subject of fascination and debate over whether her talent can be separated from her political views.
What exactly those views were, what Riefenstahl knew about Hitler and the Holocaust and when she knew it, is key to this debate and the subject of countless books and documentaries. It’s the question at the center of Riefenstahl, the new documentary from German filmmaker Andres Veiel (Black Box Brd).

Curiously, for a woman who directed a movie called Triumph of the Will, Leni Riefenstahl seemed to lose control over her own person when she first met Adolf Hitler.
“I had hot sweats,” the German filmmaker said of seeing the future Führer speak at a rally in 1932. “I was somehow captured, as by a magnetic force.”
Embedded in that description is a self-defense: She may as well have said, “I wasn’t to blame, I couldn’t help it, I was overwhelmed by Hitler’s presence, like millions of other Germans.”
The new documentary Riefenstahl, premiering Thursday at the Venice Film Festival, argues the German filmmaker carefully crafted a narrative absolving herself of responsibility for becoming Hitler’s favored cinematic propagandist.
“In a way, it is a detective story, because she is lying,” director Andres Veiel tells Deadline. “She’s manipulating.”

Ahead of tonight’s anxiously awaited presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog has a clear message for the fence-sitters who may very well swing November’s election: “Shit or get off the lawn.”
It’s almost shocking that, ahead of what may turn out to be the most divisive election in American history, there even exists a room full of eight undecided voters for Triumph to poop on. After all, considering that each candidate already has one term in the Oval Office under their belts, you’d think that the results would speak for themselves and most people would know for sure whether they want the next four years to look more like 2020 or 2024.
Still, it’s a testament to the talent of The Daily Show’s production staff (and to the participants’ ignorance of Triumph’s acerbic style) that, during last night...

Robert Smigel’s Triumph the Insult Comic Dog returned Thursday in a video that recalled his heyday at Late Night With Conan O’Brien.
Former President Donald Trump’s New York criminal trial—the one in which he’s charged with 34 felony counts surrounding an alleged hush money payment to Stormy Daniels—kicked off in Lower Manhattan with jury selection this week, and Smigel wasted no time getting the cigar-chomping puppet down on the scene.
The video finds Triumph interacting with the crowd of Trump supporters outside the courthouse — or as he puts it, “a real who’s who of who’s off their meds.”
At times, the jokes get lost among the clash of arguing bystanders, but the ten-minute video is full of Triumph’s typically cutting quips: “I think Trump’s kind of losing it. He’s even starting to slur his slurs,” he tells two Trump supporters at one point.

Debuting in 1993, Late Night with Conan O’Brien witnessed many iconic bits and gas, but arguably the best creation to emerge from the show was Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. Puppeteered by Robert Smigel, which made its first appearance in 1997, the cigar-chomping dog is rude and crude to everyone and everything, but most importantly, he’s devastatingly funny.
From attacking Star Wars fans to Bon Jovi, it doesn’t matter who you are, Triumph roasts everyone equally, and unluckily, even the Late Night Host wasn’t immune from his insults.

Marty Friedman has announced a new solo album, Drama, arriving May 17th. The former Megadeth guitarist has also offered up the lead single and album opener “Illumination.”
The six-and-a-half minute instrumental showcases Friedman’s many six-string talents, from jazz runs to neo-classical flourishes. A mellow, extended intro leads up to the track’s climatic guitar fireworks, with Friedman’s elegant solos backed by an ensemble that includes typical rock instrumentation, as well as cello and violin.
Friedman self-produced Drama, which was partially recorded at Newsin Audio Design in Italy, where Friedman had access to a plethora of vintage guitars and tones. Recording engineers include Luigi Stefanini, Frank Rosato, Takao Nakazato, Atsuo Akabae, and Kenjiro Naka. Alexander Backlund and Jay Ruston mixed the tracks, while Koji Tanaka handled the mastering at Victor Creative Media in Tokyo.

You wouldn’t expect an animated film about a talking iguana to draw equal inspiration from Andy Kaufman and “It’s a Wonderful Life,” but that just might help explain the wide appeal of Netflix’s smash hit “Leo.” It also makes perfect sense when you consider the creative minds behind Adam Sandler-led project, which includes his longtime collaborator and comedy’s not-so-secret weapon, Robert Smigel.

Ranveer Singh’s Day 1 At The Box Office With Band Baaja Baaraat Was Terrible!
It has been 13 years since Bollywood witnessed a boy who was unbelievably convincing and impressively natural on the big screen. He was what he was. One could not love him, but one could not even ignore him. He was the most ordinary-looking boy, who was just one Bhansali away from becoming a superstar! Ranveer Singh.
The Mumbai boy made his debut 13 years ago on December 10, 2010, with Yash Raj Films’ Band Baaja Baaraat opposite Anushka Sharma. Helmed by Maneesh Sharma, this film earned its success rightfully and well-deservingly.

SAG-AFTRA members have voted to ratify their contract, officially ending the longest labor battle in Hollywood history.
The contract was approved with 78% voting in favor. Turnout was 38%.
“This contract is an enormous victory for working performers, and it marks the dawning of a new era for the industry,” Fran Drescher, the union’s president, said in a message to the membership.
SAG-AFTRA suspended its 118-day strike against the major studios on Nov. 8, after reaching a tentative agreement. The agreement still had to be ratified to formally end the walkout. Had the membership voted it down, the strike likely would have resumed.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the studios in bargaining, issued a statement applauding the vote.

Here they come again, those holiday perennials. Movies, both good and bad, that year after year find their way back into theaters, onto small screens and deep into stockings that still get stuffed with digital discs.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas. A Christmas Story. Love Actually. It’s a Wonderful Life, of course. A Christmas Carol, ad infinitum. Nutcracker after Nutcracker after Nutcracker.
My personal favorite, released 19 years ago, on Nov. 10, 2004, by Warner Bros., is The Polar Express from the technophile director Robert Zemeckis.
This isn’t a sentimental choice, at least not in the conventional sense. It’s just that every time the picture pops up—and its seasonal DVDs are strung merrily across the Internet, from Amazon to Target—it reminds me of an important life lesson. That is: It’s much easier not to be an editor, especially at The New York Times.

Pixar's Elemental defied expectations by transforming from a shaky start to a box office hit, proving the power of storytelling and tenacity. The movie's universal themes of love, togetherness, and acceptance resonated with audiences, solidifying its status as an important addition to Pixar's filmography. Elemental's success extended internationally, with countries like South Korea embracing its message of peace and love, showcasing the film's ability to unite people from different backgrounds.

Prolific documentarian Alex Gibney hates liars. He hates when companies lie (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room); he hates when religions lie (Going Clear, Mea Maxima Culpa); he hates when authority figures lie (The Inventor, Client 9).
The Rosetta Stone for Gibney’s dogmatic resistance to mendacity is The Armstrong Lie. Gibney’s irritation arises not just from the general lies that Lance Armstrong told the world, but from the lies that Lance Armstrong told him during the making of the movie, yielding a documentary about the nature of deception and self-deception.
Gibney’s new two-part Apple TV+ docuseries Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker is a complementary text to The Armstrong Lie. It’s about a revered sports icon whose falsehoods eventually led to personal disgrace. It’s structured around two extensive interviews conducted at different points in the subject’s prevarication — once in delusion and once when facing a reckoning.

Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova is returning to Bulgaria for a dark comedy based on wildly true events.
The “Borat 2” and “Bodies Bodies Bodies” actress is set to star in and produce “Triumph,” inspired by the aftermath of the fall of Communism in the 1990s when Bulgarian army officials teamed up with psychics to find a rumored alien artifact to change the course of history and restore Bulgaria’s honor. Deadline first reported the news.
Bakalova and Julian Kostov (“Shadow and Bone”) will produce “Triumph” through their company Five Oceans. “Triumph” is their first production through Five Oceans, which aims to showcase Bulgarian, Balkan, and Slavic stories on an international scale.
Academy Award-nominated directors Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov (2019’s “The Father”) will helm the feature and collaborate with Bakalova once more. “Triumph” is part of the trilogy by Grozeva and Valchanov that also includes 2014’s “The Lesson” and 2016’s “Glory.

The Ruderman Family Foundation selected five more recipients of its Seal of Authentic Representation: Fox’s “9-1-1,” Apple TV Plus’s “Coda,” Freeform’s “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” and Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” and “The One.”
Marlee Matlin, who is one of the stars of “Coda,” has also received the Ruderman Family Foundation’s Morton E. Ruderman Award in Inclusion for her lifelong activism for people with disabilities.
“Full inclusiveness and authentic representation is so important to me,” Matlin said in a statement. “My first theatrical film, ‘Children of a Lesser God,’ was the first to star a Deaf actor in a leading role. Though it has been 34 years, ‘Coda’ has broken barriers in the feature world just like my first film, this time featuring not one but three Deaf actors in leading roles, playing each authentically. I hope that this recognition will serve as an example...
