Indie producers Riel Roch Decter and Sebastian Pardo’s prod company label Memory is sprouting a new branch in the shape of a curated traveling short film series. Taking place in Toronto during Tiff on September 12th, the inaugural card for Memory Presents is a talent heavy who’s who of upcoming helmers that we’ve seen, and/or will be seeing at major fests such as Sundance, SXSW, Cannes and Venice/Tiff. The 90-minute-ish program will include world premiere showings from Robert Eggers, Kahlil Joseph (both will already be at Tiff presenting their feature length films) and Patrick Brice (from Creep and The Overnight) along with Sammy Harkham. The 43rd edition of the Festival du nouveau cinéma showcases the best new films and filmmakers from around the world. The festival which has often been described as ‘ baby-tiff’ – picks up the best from Berlinale, Cannes, Venice, Telluride, Toronto and more – and demonstrates the vibrancy of filmmaking in all its forms and for all audiences. The fest has announced the first wave of films from Quebec and Canada in their lineup. Once again this year, the Festival will be putting local cinema in the limelight by screening some much-awaited works spread out over several programs, including the International Competition – Louve d’or, Focus, Fnc Lab, Panorama and Special Presentation for the features as well as a variety of short film programs.

The Hamptons International Film Festival also unveils its annual Golden Starfish competition titles.

The Hamptons International Film Festival (Hiff) is to honour filmmaker Joel Schumacher with the Golden Starfish Lifetime Achievement in Directing Award at its 22nd edition (Oct 9-13).

The director of The Lost Boys, Batman Forever and more recently two episodes of House of Cards, will also take part in a “conversation with” session on Oct 11, where he will be also be presented with the award.

Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank will also be in conversation at the festival on Oct 12, where she will receive the Creative Impact in Acting Award.

Swank won Best Actress Academy Award’s in 2000 and 2005 for Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby, and her latest performance in The Homesman will be seen when the film is screened at Hiff.

Described by the filmmaker as a "gallery," Sosialismi assembles footage from 40-something films, while also mixing in quotes, songs, and more. The theme that unites the cited material is, as the title might suggest, socialism. Peter von Bagh appropriates the footage to reconstruct a unified, idealist, and even dreamlike vision of socialist / left-wing ideas...or maybe not ideas so much as faith. This reconstruction knows no borders, and transcends place and temporality. Rather than delving into the details of the history/reality of socialism in the 20th century, the film creates a tapestry of socialist belief as found in disparate works from around the world. It is a take on what cinema thinks of / imagines as socialism. Ranging from Dziga Vertov to John Ford to Chaplin to Pasolini, dozens of films and filmmakers take part, if only implicitly, in testifying to a certain way of thinking/believing/living.
