Warner Bros. might be turning cold to the idea of a prequel/sequel to Michael Mann's seminal heist classic Heat, as, according to a new report, Heat 2 is on the back burner. A script for the long-gestating project was submitted earlier this year, but no green light has been given as yet. The main reasons behind the studio's hesitation to move forward are likely the production budget that a cinematic follow-up of this scale would require and the ongoing changes and challenges that are happening behind the scenes, making the future uncertain.
World of Reel reports that a source close to the studio suggested that "the budget demanded by Michael [Mann] is way too high." This shouldn't be surprising to learn, as Mann revealed in August last year that he envisioned Heat 2 as being "large or at least as large as the original," filming in multiple locations around the world.

Michael Mann’s Heat 2 looks stuck in limbo. A script is with Warner Bros, but there’s no sign of it getting a greenlight. More here.
It took a long, long time for director Michael Mann to make his most recent film, the biopic Ferrari. There’s not much sign that what was going to be his next movie – Heat 2 – is going much quicker.
It seems there are two problems: one is the cost, the other is the ongoing problems at Warner Bros Discovery.
Dealing with them in reverse order, just this week we reported that Warner Bros was facing difficult times. Its slate of movies is, to its credit, a risky one, but the box office performance of Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 over the last week hasn’t suggested confidence in its theatrical releases and their current ability to bring in a return. Anora North America Box Office: Sees A Reasonable Hike On 21st Monday(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Anora achieves a new and amazing feat after being in the theatres for 144 days, owing to the increase in the number of screens post-Oscar wins. The film will soon arrive on its home streaming platform, and with that, it will once again witness harsh declines along with losing theatres. But it has now entered the top five highest-grosser list of Neon at the US box office. Scroll below for the deets.
It is an independent movie, and its success financially and critically means that the audience and critics are increasingly embracing authentic, bold narratives that center on underrepresented communities. Besides getting the most Oscar wins, the film has also generated substantial box office returns. It has now surpassed Neon’s Ferrari and placed in the studio’s top-grosser list.

At this point in time, it sort of seems like serial killer thrillers are a dime a dozen — but despite that, one starring Shailene Woodley just got added to Netflix and quickly became one of the most-streamed projects on the platform (according to FlixPatrol).
"To Catch a Killer," a crime flick directed by Damián Szifron (who co-wrote the movie alongside Jonathan Wakeham), stars Woodley as Eleanor Falco, a beat cop who's stuck working the New Year's Eve shift in Baltimore when a gunman starts killing partygoers indiscriminately with a sniper rifle. When Eleanor and her team locate the apartment where the gunman appears to be located, they find it empty — and the investigation begins in earnest. Michael Mann doesn’t exclusively direct action movies, by any means, and is probably best known for making crime films, some of which also cross over into the action genre. There are also some oddities, like The Keep, as well as more biographical films like Ferrari and Ali, but many of his most acclaimed works are thrilling and/or somewhat action-packed. And it’s not hard to see why, because Mann’s always had a knack for crafting visceral and high-impact scenes within his films.

A trio of U.K. stars have joined Guy Richie’s “Wife & Dog,” rounding out the cast of the director’s next adventure into the colourful and backstabbing world of the British upper classes (which he recently explored in “The Gentleman” film and TV series).
James Norton, Paddy Considine and Pip Torrens will star in the feature, now in production, joining the previously announced Cosmo Jarvis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike and Anthony Hopkins.
“Wife & Dog” — first announced by Variety — was written by Ritchie, who also produces alongside long-time producing partner, Ivan Atkinson and Black Bear’s John Friedberg. Executive producers include Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler for Black Bear, and Louise Killin. Black Bear launched sales on the title in Cannes last year, and the film marks the company’s third collaboration with Ritchie and Atkinson following “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and “In the Grey.”

Exclusive: Terry Gilliam’s biblical comedy Carnival: At The End Of Days has been boarded by prolific Italian producer and entrepreneur Andrea Iervolino, whose credits include Ferrari, Maserati: The Brothers and To The Bone.
Iervolino is due to produce and help finance the film and is heading to the European Film Market in Berlin this month to discuss the project with potential buyers and will look to add a sales agent while there. The aim is to shoot in Italy as soon as April.
According to Iervolino, the project will reflect Gilliam’s customary ambition, scope and creative vision. He describes it to us as “an epic and visionary work” and a “live-action film that makes unprecedented use of CGI”: “Carnival is an extraordinarily complex film for an independent production. London’s Mercato Metropolitano food market is opening a studio for TV and movie productions – while still functioning as a sustainable food court – after servicing the shoot of upcoming doc series “The Unknown Chefs” produced by Italy’s Andrea Iervolino and British music producer David Tickle.
The “Unknown Chefs” series chronicling the journey of four cooks who sought refuge in the United Kingdom –- respectively from Syria, Namibia, Nepal, and Uzbekistan –- and then managed to turn the food of their homeland into their livelihoods, will drop March 7 on streamers including Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Iervolino’s Tatatu platform.
Iervolino produced the show with Tickle via his Tickle Entertainment shingle. Tickle is known for his work with artists including Blondie, Peter Gabriel, U2, Prince and Joe Cocker.
The show’s protagonists were able to launch their own street food businesses with the support of Mercato Metropolitano.

Music biopics do not always do well at the box office, but A Complete Unknown is a definite exception. To date, the movie has made over $53 million worldwide, and has primarily rolled out in the United States. This total is expected to grow over the coming weeks, as the Bob Dylan biopic will expand its international rollout over the course of January. While the movie's focus makes it appeal mostly to an American audience, the total will still grow as more people get the chance to see the film.
The film's director, James Mangold, is no stranger to the music biopic. He previously narrativized the life of Johnny Cash in the acclaimed 2005 film Walk the Line. The movie earned multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Actor, a category in which A Complete Unknown is likely to be a strong competitor. Barring further disruptions, the Oscar nominations are set to be announced on Thursday,...

Robert Eggers Nosferatu from Focus Features sank its teeth into the Christmas box office. With James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown – Searchlight Pictures’ top-grossing film since it was acquired by Disney in 2019 – they ushered in a heady post-Covid moment for indie films at no. 3 and 5 at the domestic box office. Yes, both are labels of major studios but indie labels going for something different than Mufasa: The Lion King or Wicked.
The space for grownup films, for indie fare, had been steadily improving this fall and the latest numbers are the strongest indication yet that theatrical is back for a broader range of movies – and horror for Christmas.
A24’s Babygirl starring Nicole Kidman also grossed $4.39 million for the weekend for a cume of $7.2 million and a no. 7 spot.
Distributors have been saying for some time that a rising tide will lift all boats and with this holiday frame it finally may have happened.

Refresh for more…Mufasa continued to get from the count on Thursday, beating Sonic The Hedgehog 3, $12M to $11.55M. The 3-day and 5-days on these two family movies are expected to be close. Mufasa is currently looking to be the stronger at $58M. Running total through yesterday on Mufasa is $76.4M while Sonic 3 stands at $99.55M.
But enough about those filthy animals, the real story over the holiday are the classic labels, Focus Features and Searchlight which are both seeing record openings. Post Covid, Focus Features rose from the ashes this weekend to remind the town how hip they can make movies, the win here being Robert Eggers’ gothic vampire movie Nosferatu which is eyeing a $21.4M 3-day and $40.6M 5-day after $7.6M yesterday, the pic’s second day of release. At five days, that’s the biggest Focus Features opening ever, besting the Friday-Tuesday take of 2019’s Downton Abbey which did $38.4M.

In the contemporary landscape of great independent dramas, only a few studios stand out for giving audiences some of the best movies in recent memory. There are always the newest big names on the block in indie filmmaking. From Blumhouse to A24, these hot commodities have produced some instant classics that continue to resonate with audiences. One of the best indie studios of the 21st century is Neon, and in the 2020s, they have made some of the most popular movies.
Similarly to A24, Neon has become most identifiable by the success of its horror films. Hits like Infinity Pool, Titane and Cuckoo have certainly given Neon a distinct edginess. However, their dramas are even more captivating, with a number of them reaching the heights of the Academy Awards. Films like Parasite and Anatomy of a Fall come to mind. Regardless of genre, Neon has been a top studio in the industry,...

As a director, James Mangold is somewhat of a chameleon. When looking at his filmography, it’s hard to nail down what exactly makes a “Mangold movie.” This isn’t a knock on the director, but rather, proof that he’s very good at matching the style of whatever project he’s working on. Even when he’s operating in a genre we’ve seen countless times, Mangold knows how to make a strong version of that genre that makes the occasional clichés work for the story. Ford v. Ferrari wasn’t necessarily groundbreaking as a racing film, but it utilized the strengths of its predecessors. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny found Mangold having to step into Steven Spielberg’s shoes, which he did admirably. Films like 3:10 to Yuma and Logan played with the language of Westerns to evoke stories that couldn’t help remind us of the best of the genre.

Before developing his penchant for crime thrillers and high-octane films like Heat and Ferrari, director Michael Mann took an unexpected dive into the realm of horror and fantasy with his 1983 film The Keep. His second theatrical feature, after his 1981 project Thief, is widely known for being an unmitigated disaster in post-production, suffering from the death of its special effects supervisor and studio meddling that cut Mann's original 210 minutes of footage down to just 96. For a time, the director himself even disowned the film. Its problems haven't stopped it from becoming a cult classic though. Now, the war horror is finally coming home with a long-overdue upgrade thanks to a 4K Ultra HD release from Vinegar Syndrome which is now available for purchase.

Pierfrancesco Favino, who plays Maria Callas’ protective butler in Pablo Larraín’s “Maria,” doesn’t back down from a fight, on-screen or in life.
At last year’s Venice Film Festival, the Rome native erupted with the kind of volcanic indignation that Callas was known for, furious that American actors like “House of Gucci” and “Ferrari” star Adam Driver kept getting cast as iconic Italians. Those parts should have gone to Italian actors, Favino argued at a press conference — though he was quick to add he had nothing against Driver.
With “Maria,” Favino gets the kind of quietly scene-stealing role that could show Hollywood what it’s been missing. In the meditative, slightly surreal drama, he plays Ferruccio, a loyal helpmate who caters to Callas by moving her grand piano around the apartment to whatever window she thinks has the best light that day, despite suffering from a bad back.

Timothee Chalamet and his Complete Unknown director James Mangold will receive the 2024 Gotham Awards Visionary Tribute for their work on the Bob Dylan biopic.
The honor recognizes collaborations that push the boundaries of storytelling in film.
“In A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold have beautifully captured Dylan’s emergence in 1960s New York not just as an artistic evolution, but as a meditation on the necessity of change,” The Gotham Film & Media Institute executive director Jeffrey Sharp said in a statement. “Through Chalamet’s breathtakingly authentic performance and Mangold’s masterful direction, we witness Dylan’s transformation from folk prophet to electric rebel, showing how growth often requires letting go of the very relationships and identities that shaped us. Together, they have created a work that will not only resonate with longtime Dylan admirers but also introduce his revolutionary artistry to a new generation. We’re thrilled...

A few days ago, The Hollywood Reporter published a story saying that in addition to developing another "Top Gun" sequel, Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is "exploring a follow-up" to "Days of Thunder," the 1990 racing movie he starred in for director Tony Scott. At a glance, you can see how that decision might make sense: 2022's "Top Gun: Maverick," another decades-later sequel to a Cruise-Scott collaboration, was a gigantic box office hit, so naturally Cruise is interested in revisiting his old characters, like NASCAR driver Cole Trickle, to see if there's any more gold to mine from them. Currently, there are no writers, directors, or other stars attached, so this is very much a "Cruise wants to do it" type of story, and there's nothing set in stone quite yet.
But there are a few reasons a "Days of Thunder" sequel may not make a ton of sense in 2025 or beyond.

Hollywood stars Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz will team up for a new action thriller film directed by Marc Webb. Titled “Day Drinker,” the movie follows a cruise ship bartender embroiled in a criminal conspiracy after encountering a mysterious regular customer. Depp and Cruz have previously starred together in several box office hits, including “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Blow.”
Produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of the successful “John Wick” franchise, the script comes from writer Zach Dean known for films like “Fast X.” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson praised the creative team, saying the film “combines a commercially appealing concept with unexpected twists through an exciting story.”
The announcement comes after Depp’s legal victory earlier this year against ex-wife Amber Heard. His role in “Day Drinker” marks Depp’s return to a major Hollywood studio project for the first time since 2018’s “Fantastic Beasts” installment.

For decades, the line, “Cause she’s got a Great Ass,” shouted by Al Pacino in Michael Mann’s crime classic “Heat” has entertained, but also befuddled viewers. Most have chalked it up to Pacino’s lively performance style or the fact that his character is trying to mess with Hank Azaria’s, but in Pacino’s recently published memoir, “Sonny Boy,” he shared that the real reason LAPD Lieutenant Vincent Hanna is so hyped up throughout the film is because he built his whole character around doing cocaine.
“A lot of people didn’t know that,” Pacino said in a recent interview on the “Wtf Podcast with Marc Maron” in which he discussed the memoir. “It took me 20 years before I could say anything about it.”
Though he was playing a character inspired by a real guy, Pacino developed his own version, making Hanna a recreational cocaine user and...

Bugatti is slated to film late next year in Italy and France for Iervolino’s new banner, The Andrea Iervolino Company.

Are “Anora” and “The Brutalist” being underestimated for an ensemble nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards? Who will be the surprise SAG nominee of the year? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their first SAG Awards film predictions.
While “Anora” is perched atop the Best Picture odds at the Oscars, it’s not even in the top five in the SAG ensemble odds, sitting in sixth place. That might be because the Palme d’Or champ is perceived as a Mikey Madison vehicle, but it’s also a sneaky ensemble piece with great performances by Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, and Vache Tovmasyan. Similarly, “The Brutalist” — third in the Best Picture odds but seventh in ensemble — could easily be another film that gets multiple individual nominations, for Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce, but get snubbed in ensemble like “The Power of the Dog,...

Adam Driver has taken on many diverse roles in films such as Lincoln (2012), Frances Ha (2012), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), BlacKkKlansman (2018), Marriage Story (2019), The Last Duel (2021), House of Gucci (2021), and Ferrari (2023). However, for mainstream fans, his portrayal of Kylo Ren, or Ben Solo, in the Star Wars franchise remains his most iconic role.
While the Sequel Trilogy had its share of clumsy moments, Driver’s performance stood out, and Kylo Ren is still regarded as one of the most significant characters in the trilogy. This lasting impact explains why discussions about Kylo Ren persist.
One key aspect of Kylo’s character in the films was his connection to Darth Vader, a relationship that was largely left unexplored. However, a recent Star Wars story has finally delved deeper into the origins of this connection, shedding light on the mysterious bond between Kylo and Vader.

In the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry, the sale of artist catalogs has become a billion-dollar business. Legacy acts, from Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen and even the iconic Queen, have cashed in on their life’s work for enormous sums, leading to speculation about how much iconic bands like Pink Floyd could command for their music rights. While the band held off on selling their music for years, a rumor sparked that they recently ended up making $100 million less than they had initially bargained for.

A good tasty noir, like “Love Lies Bleeding,” always feels contemporary, even if set in the past; that’s because it should feel as urgent as the love-and-death stakes it’s about. “Killer Heat,” on the other hand, while not quite so old-fashioned that it creaks, definitely plays like a mirage of detective noirs you’ve seen before. To start with: Could there be a worse title? It makes the movie sound like some straight-to-tape potboiler from the ’80s starring Jim Belushi and Daphne Zuniga. “Killer Heat” opens with the voice of its star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who has a way of sounding like Keanu Reeves’ brainier brother), delivering one of those logy “hardboiled” philosophical nuggets to the audience (“The Icarus myth was set on the island of Crete. And apparently no one there had learned much from his story…”).

Monika Bacardi and longtime business partner Andrea Iervolino, producers on dozens of movies including Ferrari and To The Bone, have entered into a war of words and legal saber rattling following their recent split.

Updated: Italian producer Andrea Iervolino — whose credits include Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” the Johnny Depp-starrer “Waiting for the Barbarians” and “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend” — has parted ways with business partner Monika Bacardi and is launching a new film and TV outfit called The Andrea Iervolino Company.
Iervolino and Bacardi were partners in Ilbe, the studio they co-founded and jointly ran for 13 years.

At the Venice Film Festival press conference for “Maria,” filmmaker Pablo Larraín’s latest portrait of an iconic woman of the 20th century, one journalist was bold enough to ask whether or not Angelina Jolie had the Oscars in mind upon taking the role Ever the diplomat, the Academy Award winner pulled the focus back to Maria Callas, the supreme opera diva she portrays in the film. “In my own business if there’s a response to the work, I’m very grateful, but in my heart to disappoint the people who love her and who she means a lot to, and her legacy, I came to care for her,” she said. “I didn’t want to do a disservice to this woman.”
If the reaction to the film out of its world premiere at Venice is any indication, Jolie has nothing to worry about. The film, which imaginatively recounts...

Logan Lucky has a great ensemble cast led by Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, and Daniel Craig. The 2017 action heist comedy was directed by Steven Soderbergh, who created one of the greatest heist movie franchises ever made with the Ocean's trilogy. Logan Lucky follows two brothers, Driver's Clyde Logan and Tatum's Jimmy Logan, who try to pull off an ambitious heist during a NASCAR race in North Carolina. Logan Lucky is currently streaming on Netflix after releasing in theaters in August 2017, earning a worldwide box office total of roughly $48.4 million against a production budget of $29 million.
Although Logan Lucky wasn't successful at the 2017 box office, the film earned an impressive Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 92%, making it one of the highest-rated movies of the year. The esteemed filmmaker behind the Johnny Cash bio-musical “Walk the Line” and superhero drama “Logan,” James Mangold has done it all. He’s torn up the race track with “Ford v Ferrari,” been the only director other than Steven Spielberg to take the helm of an “Indiana Jones” film with last year’s “Dial of Destiny,” and later this year, he’ll debut his Bob Dylan drama starring Timotheé Chalamet, “A Complete Unknown.” Before he began his career as a filmmaker, he learned from legends like Alexander Mackendrick (“The Sweet Smell of Success”) and Milos Forman (“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”).
In a recent response post on X, Mangold explained his creative process and how it was passed down from these “masters,” as well as gathered from watching the work of others.
“I have learned this way of working from watching masters I admire. Some masters have been my teachers in person.
