Before The Impact Match #1: Steve Maclin b. Suicide

Image

Copyright: ©2021 Ctmg, Inc. All rights reserved.

In his 4 star review of Don’T Breathe, Tom Stockman enthusiastically says, “While none of the young actors make much of an impression with weak and unlikable characters, I still wish there had more of them to kill. I want a sequel! Heck, put ‘The Blind Man’ in the next Suicide Squad movie….with his dog Cujo and that turkey baster, he’d the most impressive villain on the screen!” (Review).

Check out the brand new trailer for the sequel Don’T Breathe 2

The sequel is set in the years following the initial deadly home invasion, where Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang) lives in quiet solace until his past sins catch up to him. Directed by Rodo Sayagues and written by Fede Alvarez & Rodo Sayagues, based on characters created by Fede Alvarez & Rodo Sayagues,...

Who Will Survive James Gunn's The Suicide Squad?
Image
In a recent tweet, James Gunn announced that his sequel/loose reboot of DC's The Suicide Squad was fully completed, and that the cast and crew would not be returning for any reshoots. This initially gave fans hope that they might be able to see the finished product earlier than anticipated, however, Gunn has since made it a point to inform expectant fans that the film will be keeping its August 6th release date, where it will be released dually in theaters and on HBO Max.

With so much ample time between completion and release, fans have had little else to do but speculate, especially about who will survive Gunn's R-rated anti-hero flick. Described as coming from the "twisted" mind of James Gunn and sporting a roster full of mainly D-list villains, the odds don't look hopeful for this lot, who will likely give literal meaning to the name The Suicide Squad.

Image
Exclusive: Dorsey Pictures, the Red Arrow-owned production company behind series such as Discovery DIY’s Building Alaska and Maine Cabin Masters, is moving into the business format space after acquiring the rights to personal finance book Rich Dad Poor Dad.

The company, which also makes Oxygen’s Accident, Suicide or Murder, is adapting the book, written by Robert Kiyosaki, for television. The book, which was first published in 1997 and recommended by Oprah Winfrey, has sold over 200M copies worldwide. It is the story of growing up with two dads — his real father and the father of his best friend, his rich dad — and the ways in which both men shaped his thoughts about money and investing. The book explodes the myth that you need to earn a high income to be rich and explains the difference between working for money and having your money work for you.

Hear New Alan Vega Song, ‘Fist,’ From the Late Suicide Musician’s Lost Album
Image
Sacred Bones has released another new Alan Vega song, “Fist,” from the late Suicide frontman’s upcoming lost album, Mutator, out April 23rd.

“Fist” finds a unique balance between mesmerizing and abrasive — locked in a steady drum groove with one synth swirling languidly while the other whirrs with a relentless fury. Vega’s vocals, drenched in echo, add another hypnotizing layer to the song.

In a statement, Vega’s frequent collaborator and partner Liz Lamere said of “Fist,” the “relentless forward movement of the music coupled with Vega’s battle...

Is making up Jared Leto the ticket to Oscar? ‘The Little Things’ could be his 3rd film to win that prize
Image
If you want to win an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, make sure you’re doing work on Jared Leto. That might be one lesson from the Oscars shortlists, where Leto’s film “The Little Things” was included among the 10 semi-finalists in that category. If it ultimately receives a nomination and wins, it would be the third Leto film in less than 10 years to win this exact award.

SEEJared Leto (‘The Little Things’) on creating a character from a ‘blank canvas:’ ‘You become a detective of sorts’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

The first was “Dallas Buyers Club” (2013), which famously won Best Makeup and Hairstyling despite a makeup budget of only $250. Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews prevailed for that film in no small part for transforming Leto into transgender character Rayon, for which Leto also won Best Supporting Actor. Though in the years since, as trans actors, artists and activists have gained more visibility in the industry,...

How Billy Idol Discovered Punk and Became Billy Idol

Billy Idol has always pushed the boundaries of chronological time, starting with the anachronistic 1970s punk look he pushed all over 1980s MTV. Idol turned 65 on November 30th, three days after the release of Miley Cyrus’ new album, Plastic Hearts, which features a brand-new duet with him on the excellent track “Night Crawling,” reviving the synth-punk sound of his classics. In an interview on an episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, Idol looked back at some of his formative moments and more. Some highlights follow; to hear the entire episode,...

Arcade Fire’s Will Butler Aims High on ‘Generations’ but Suffers a Rocky Landing
Image
Generations makes a strong case that Arcade Fire’s second most famous Butler brother, Will, could be the group’s pop mastermind with its quirky, upbeat rockers about modern life. He opens the record with “Outta Here,” which he built with fuzzy analog keyboards and smartypants lyrics like, “Had enough bad news/Had enough of your generation.” It recalls Eno and Bowie in its synthiness but also Spoon in its sunny determination. “Close My Eyes” feels a bit like Suicide pretending to be a power-pop band with its quivering keys...

The Suicide Squad Roll Call Posters Are Just a Massacre Waiting to Happen

James Gunn has shared a new poster for The Suicide Squad. Gunn's DC Comics adaptation has largely remained mysterious throughout production but the curtain was pulled back during DC FanDome over the weekend. While the event may be over, Gunn, who serves as the writer and director of the movie, shared another new poster that reveals the new Task Force X lineup. The filmmaker also assures that we are in for a massacre come summer 2021.

Taking to Twitter, James Gunn shared the new poster which sees the title card surrounded by logos for all of the characters who will be included in the reboot/sequel. A major part of the movie's DC FanDome panel was finally confirming who everyone in the massive cast is playing and this poster leans heavily on that. It is extremely colorful and vibrant. Gunn shared the poster with the following caption.

‘Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story’: Watch The Exclusive Trailer For Docu Narrated By Michelle Rodriguez
Image
The onscreen exploits of stuntwomen, and their off-screen battles for fair and equal treatment, is explored in Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story, a new documentary from director April Wright for Shout! Studios that debuts September 22 on digital platforms.

Narrated by Fast & Furious franchise star Michelle Rodriquez and based on Mollie Gregory’s 2015 best-seller, the film chronicles the lives of women who perform the stunts in some of Hollywood’s biggest action sequences — from the early days of silent movies to today’s blockbusters. The producers are Stephanie Austin, Michael Gruskoff and Marion Rosenberg.

“These unheralded heroines are the generations of stuntwomen who risked their lives in front of the camera, while behind it they fought for equal rights with male stunt performers, battled sexism and harassment, sustained life-threatening injuries and returned to the fray after each battle,” the producing team said in a joint statement.

‘Unsolved Mysteries’: The O.G. of True Crime Returns With Gritty Netflix Reboot
Image
The O.G. of TV true crime has returned. Before there was Making a Murderer, Tiger King, The Jinx, and Serial, the nation’s fix for real-life murder tales came in weekly doses courtesy of Unsolved Mysteries, which ran interrupted from 1987 to 2002. Since the series left airwaves, the genre has grown into a powerhouse: Some networks dedicate their entire programming slate to it (hi, Oxygen), and streaming services rely on true-crime for viral hits.

Yet, 33 years after its debut, old episodes of Unsolved Mysteries remain a profoundly bingeable experience, thanks...

Superman Porno Was Almost a Real Thing
Image
2020 is a strange time, but as it turns out, the 80s might have been even stranger as far as comic books are concerned. In Action Comics #592, which was released in 1987, Superman almost got roped into starring in a porno with Big Barda. The Man of Steel has had some really interesting storylines over the years, but this comic book might very well take the cake as being the strangest one out there. It's hard to believe that this made it past the censors. But it did.

The story begins with Big Barda hanging out in Metropolis's notorious Suicide Slum. She ends up meeting a character there named Sleez, which should tell you everything you need to know at this point. But, it's about to get a whole lot weirder. As it turns out, Sleez was too much for Apokoplips, so he was thrown out. He goes onto explain that's why...

Suicide Squad Ayer Cut on the Way? Warner Bros Owner Teases “Anything Is Possible”
Zack Snyder at an event for Sucker Punch (2011)
What happens when a dog finally catches a car? We’re set to find out next year, when HBO Max finally debuts Zack Snyder’s Justice League as it was originally meant to be seen. Reports indicate that this version of the project, which attempted to bring DC superheroes Wonder Woman, Batman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg together for a big screen live-action adventure back in 2017, will either manifest as a four-hour film, or as a six-part series on the streaming service.

“It will be an entirely new thing, and, especially talking to those who have seen the released movie, a new experience apart from that movie,” Snyder has promised. “You probably saw one-fourth of what I did.”

Naturally, now that a Snyder Cut of Justice League is finally coming to fruition, fan attention is turning to David Ayer’s Dceu team-up effort Suicide Squad, which staggered onto screens in...

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Soundtrack: The Best Songs From the Original Games
Sean Connery, Honor Blackman, and Shirley Eaton in Goldfinger (1964)
The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 remasters have quickly become the talk of the gaming world. There’s really no mystery as to why that’s the case. Not only do millions of people have fond memories of the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games, but few titles released since the first two Tony Hawk games have challenged their brand of high-octane extreme sports action.

Yet, we suspect there’s another reason so many people are excited about the re-release of the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games. Yes, as you no doubt guessed from the headline of the article you’re currently reading, it’s the soundtracks.

The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater soundtracks quickly became infamous upon their release for not only featuring an array of licensed tracks (which was still something of a rarity for the time) but songs that captured the culture of the extreme sports movement.

‘Le Choc du Futur’: SXSW Film Review
Le choc du futur (2019)
[Editor’s note: “Le Choc du Futur” is one of more than 100 movies originally scheduled to screen at the SXSW Film Festival in March. After the coronavirus outbreak forced the festival to cancel, event organizers partnered with Amazon Prime to make seven of those features available to stream for free through Weds., May 6.]

Turn on just about any pop radio station at any point over the last quarter century, and chances are good that the vast majority of the sounds you’ll be hearing were created on machines. Yet on film, representations of musicmaking are still largely stuck in a more analog era. Maybe that’s due to a lingering generational bias, or maybe watching a girl strap on a Les Paul or sit down at a piano is just inherently more cinematic than watching her tapping away at an 808. Whatever the case, French musician Marc Collin’s debut feature “Le Choc du Futur...

James Gunn
James Gunn Read Every Suicide Squad Comic Book to Prepare for His First DC Movie
James Gunn
James Gunn says he read every single comic book involving his characters in The Suicide Squad. The director had already read a lot of the source material, but went back and read it all again, along with extra stories outside of the original comics that included his characters. That's a lot of reading, but in the end, it's what helps Gunn nail the essence of the characters while being able to try new things and stray, much like he did with Guardians of the Galaxy.

It seems like a pretty basic idea, but not everybody gets into the comic book source material when making a movie for Marvel or DC. In order to pull off a project in a sincere way, James Gunn thinks that it's necessary to go in and read it all. Gunn was asked on social media if he had consultants helping while making The Suicide Squad.

Guardians of the Galaxy Will Return in Thor 4 According to Vin Diesel
Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, and Dave Bautista in Les Gardiens de la Galaxie (2014)
A rather epic crossover is coming our way, as the Guardians of the Galaxy are set to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder. This, according to star Vin Diesel, who voices Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether or not the actor was supposed to let this rather big detail regarding the upcoming sequel slip is another question entirely. Either way, it's out in the world now.

Vin Diesel is currently promoting his new movie Bloodshot. During a recent interview, he was asked about the status of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is still on the books at Marvel Studios with director James Gunn, but ended up getting delayed a bit because of the director's work on The Suicide Squad. It was during his answer that Diesel spilled the beans on the Thor 4 appearance. Here's what he had to say about it.

‘Birds of Prey’ Review: Margot Robbie Soars in Violent, Vibrant Girl-Powered Anti-Superhero Movie
Cathy Yan
Everyone hates Harley Quinn. At least, that’s where Cathy Yan’s ambitious “Birds of Prey” starts: Margot Robbie’s glitter-loving anti-heroine is attempting to pick up the pieces after being kicked to the curb by the Joker, forced to carve out a new life for herself without the built-in protection of Gotham’s biggest baddie, and struggling to find her place in a world eager to divide its brassiest characters into “good” and “bad.” Yan’s film, written by “Bumblebee” scribe Christina Hodson, imagines a vivid (and very human) new origin story for Harley Quinn, resulting in .

Yet Harley’s titular emancipation — the film’s subtitle is the wordy, if honest “And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn” — still takes a backseat to franchise conventions, from the good to the cloying and the bad (disjointed plotting and a messy narrative).

Yan and Hodson get the boring stuff out...

Birds of Prey Review: Harley Gets a Squad Upgrade
Harley is reborn in the colorful, joyful, and empowering female team up Birds of Prey. Here’s our review.

Wonder Woman is wonderful but not everyone can be a gorgeous, all-powerful Themysciran princess who’s also a demi-god. DC’s latest Birds of Prey--a follow up (of sorts) to Suicide Squad that's also everything that movie wasn’t--is a grubby, funny, joyful female team-up that resonantly shows us heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.

Suicide Squad was a cinematic car crash, so there’s something so satisfying about the fact that four years later, released over a weekend where a movie about the Joker is nominated for 11 Oscars, Harley has also completely reinvented herself as a flawed, powerful and empowering leader in a film that reverses her character’s former betrayal.

No longer reduced to “a whole lotta pretty in a whole lotta crazy...

How Batman Movies Influenced the Design of ‘Birds of Prey’
Margot Robbie
When you’re a production designer, and your mood board is the mental state of the film’s lead character, it seems like the creative world is your oyster. When the lead character is Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, that’s a creative world where all bets are off.

“I approached everything through her ditzy, glitzy, analytical, yet throwaway, approach to absorbing the world,” explains K.K. Barrett, the man responsible for creating the world of “Birds of Prey.”

There is nothing subtle about Harley Quinn. Barrett adds, “It’s almost like you’re telling a crazy story to someone that goes off on a tangent, and you have to keep pulling it back and focusing it.

Barrett and director Cathy Yan had to find places in Los Angeles that felt like Gotham. “We had to avoid trees, especially palm trees and grass,” Yan says.

Fortnite Teases Birds of Prey Movie Crossover Featuring Harley Quinn
Margot Robbie
Fortnite has teased a possible crossover with Margot Robbie's Birds of Prey. The upcoming movie has been gaining positive early reactions and a pairing with one of the biggest video games in the world is a wise choice. As for when this crossover event will take place, that is unclear, though the movie hits theaters on February 7th, so we should receive some concrete information in the coming days from both Fortnite and Warner Bros. Pictures.

Warner Bros. posted a video featuring Birds of Prey cast members Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Ella Jay Basco, along with some others, which the official Fortnite account responded to by saying, "See you soon, Harley!" This led fans to immediately speculate about the upcoming crossover event. So far, the reactions from Fortnite fans has been overwhelmingly positive with many looking forward to new in-game skins from Birds of Prey with new custom challenges.

Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz in Sonic, le film (2020)
Best Movies to See in Feb.: ‘Birds of Prey,’ ‘Downhill,’ ‘The Invisible Man’
Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz in Sonic, le film (2020)
Forget the horror films of 2019 — was there anything scarier than that first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer, featuring a disturbingly toothy rendition of the video game hero? It created such an outcry that the film was bumped to February 2020; thankfully, you’ve got a lot of other choices re: what to check out this month at the movies, from a supervillainess getting her moment in the spotlight to a few fresh literary adaptations, an ingenious new take on a classic Universal monster-movie staple and an A-list American remake of a Swedish black comedy.

Margot Robbie, ‘Birds of Prey’ Co-Stars Justify the Movie’s R-Rating, Violence and Cussing
Following the success of “Joker” last year, DC Films is continuing its gritty streak with “Birds of Prey,” a slam-bang adventure about Harley Quinn.

Though DC Film’s 2016 tentpole “Suicide Squad” took a critical bashing at the time, filmgoers quickly took a liking to Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn. “Birds of Prey” gives the fan favorite character her own adventure, having her ditch the male-dominated Squad to work alongside a rogues’ gallery of women.

For the creators behind the upcoming movie, an R-rating was the only way the project made any sense.

“Harley’s not really someone to hold back,” Robbie told Variety‘s Marc Malkin on Thursday at the opening of Harleywood in Hollywood. “The R-rating really allowed us to take it to the next level with fight scenes.”

Director Cathy Yan added, “The women are unabashedly themselves and very unapologetic in the movie. It was very...

The Suicide Squad's Next Target is... The Flash?!
The Suicide Squad is one of the worst gigs in comics. Not only is your life always in immediate danger thanks to implanted bombs, but the missions the group often faces are usually uphill battles. One of their next missions will see them face a threat that won't be put down easy: The Flash.

DC's latest Suicide Squad team is a mix of new and old faces. While regulars such as Harley Quinn and Deadshot are part of the team, new team members include Wink, The Aerie, Osita, and the Chaos Kitten. Writer Tom Taylor and artist Bruno Redondo compiled a group where nobody is safe from danger - evident by the deadly first issue of the series.

Javicia Leslie in Batwoman (2019)
‘Batwoman,’ ‘Harley Quinn’ & ‘Duncanville’ Head To Britain’s Channel 4
Javicia Leslie in Batwoman (2019)
British broadcaster Channel 4 has acquired Batwoman and Harley Quinn from Warner Bros and Duncanville, the animation from Amy Poehler and The Simpsons veterans Mike and Julie Scully.

Batwoman will broadcast on Channel 4’s youth network E4 in 2020, featuring Ruby Rose as the DC character — the first openly gay female lead of a live-action superhero show.

The show, made by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros, was renewed last week for a second season by The CW.

E4 will also be the home of Harley Quinn, the bawdy, made-for-adults animated show starring Kaley Cuoco as the DC character, who was played by Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad. Both shows were sold by Warner Bros. International Television Distribution.

Elsewhere, Channel 4 has picked up Fox’s Duncanville in a deal with NBCUniversal. It is hoping the animated show and Harley Quinn can capture some of the success it has had with Rick And Morty.

Jared Leto Morphs Into a Buff Vampire in First Morbius Trailer
Jared Leto
Jared Leto is about to get more than he bargained for in Morbius.

Sony released the first teaser trailer for the thriller starring Leto as Michael Morbius, a scientist with a rare blood disorder who goes to extreme lengths to try and find a cure.

“Michael, I’ve known you since you were a child. You have a gift. You always have. If there’s an answer to your disease, you’ll find it,” Jared Harris narrates in the beginning of the trailer as shots of Michael’s early life play.

“I should’ve died years ago,” Michael himself says.

Terrifying First Look At Jared Leto’s Morbius Leaks Online
Jared Leto gets his second stab at starring in a comic book movie with the July release of Morbius, the latest installment of Sony’s Spider-Man-adjacent series that also features Venom and may ultimately include Tom Holland’s Peter Parker as well. It would be fair to say that Leto’s superhero track record isn’t the greatest, with his performance as the Joker in Suicide Squad proving divisive among fans, along with the constant rumors of truly bizarre on-set behavior.

The 48 year-old is reportedly done as the Clown Prince of Crime though, with the latest Birds of Prey trailer making it look as if Harley Quinn kills him off for good. This can’t have gone down too well with the Academy Award winner, either, who was already unhappy with DC and Warner Bros.’ decision to move forward on a Joker movie without consulting him, although a billion...

James Gunn
Why James Gunn Passed on Superman to Direct The Suicide Squad
James Gunn
James Gunn is one filmmaker who is courted by both DC and Marvel. Ever since the success of Guardians of the Galaxy and his temporary firing from Marvel following a Twitter scandal, Gunn was invited by DC to pitch a movie he would want to make using one of their properties. The filmmaker recently clarified the details of that arrangement to a fan on Instagram with the following statement:

"As has been reported many times, DC offered me whatever film I wanted to do, including some sort of Superman movie (not specifically Man of Steel 2 as I've seen reported). I chose The Suicide Squad because it's one of my favorite properties in the world. It's the story I wanted to tell more than any other."

Clearly, DC trusted Gunn to come up with a new and exciting vision for any of their comic characters instead of insisting that he focus on any particular one.

It’s been an interesting few months for mainstream movies and promises of Lgbtq+ representation, from “Avengers: Endgame” and its blink-and-you-miss-it “gay moment” to “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and its also blink-and-you-miss-it (and cut out of its Singapore release) same-sex kiss to whatever the McU is doing with a future trans character. Jay Roach’s Roger Ailes scandal piece “Bombshell” is not on the scale of those movies nor was it ever promoted with the promise of similar inclusion, but after a Variety cover story with one of the film’s stars, Margot Robbie, it has technically joined the conversation of hypothetical representation in film.

In “Bombshell,” Robbie’s Kayla Pospisil sleeps with Kate McKinnon’s closeted lesbian character Jess Carr after a drunken night at the bar. In the aftermath, Kayla tells Jess, “Oh, I’m not a lesbian!” What could easily have been just a throwaway line,...

David Ayer Wants To Make His ‘Dirty Dozen’ Remake A ‘Mission: Impossible’/’Fast & Furious’-Style Franchise
David Ayer is a filmmaker that tends to draw an immediate reaction from film fans. Either you love him and respect his work on films such as “Training Day” and “End of Watch” or you are a bit disgusted when you remember “Suicide Squad” or “Bright.” Needless to say, there are very few out there that are just “meh” on the guy.

Birds of Prey will be the first superhero movie out of the gate from either DC Comics or Marvel Studios, and it promises to be a big hit. IMDb hails it as the most anticipated movie of 2020, though a second poll from Fandango put Wonder Woman 1984 in that top spot. However this all shakes out,...
